Ugly duckling into a....

Upon occasion I find a bag or three full of fabric scraps on my front porch, dropped off by party unknown.
This arrived as an unfinished top stuffed in one of the bags. I sliced and diced and inserted the pink sashing as there was so much pink already going on in the blocks. I added some richness to the mix with the border fabrics, and quilted each block with a curl of feathers. The outer border is quilted with a feather-and-curl. I think it came out pretty nice! The guild was happy to receive it and give it to a charitable cause :)

You are very good at 'making do' and turning out a very pretty piece.
How did you do that? Good color sense.

Tiggersmom 01-30-2014 12:35 PM

Excellent! ! ! !

JenniePenny 01-30-2014 12:36 PM

justflyingin 01-30-2014 12:57 PM

I also love how you sliced and diced it and made it really pretty. Do you know who gave it to you?

lynnie 01-30-2014 01:06 PM

came out great.
so, people just drop fabric off at you r house at random times???
where do you live, and do you want a neighbor.
I think that's really cool to do that.
better than a box of kittens, ( and I love cats)

Novel ides of how to cut the blocks apart. The sashing adds to it very well. Donated it will bring someone comfort and joy. thanks and hugs to you.

Excellent save !!!

Baloonatic 01-30-2014 02:50 PM

Thank you for the kind words! :) The bags people leave are almost always just scraps and I haven't a clue who is doing it. Sometimes there are discarded blocks or sad failures thrown in, and I might try to save those. I have to go through the bags carefully, I never know what will be found in there! Once a CD, a rotary blade, very often there are sewing pins...and once a bra! It wasn't even cotton...
As soon as I quilt it, I'll show you another "save" that I had to resew almost every single seam. It came out quite beautiful, but really would have been easier to have made it from scratch!
No fabric scrap shall go to waste! LOL! They all get minced up and a few of us in the guild use them to make pet beds for our local animal shelter.
How I made this was I measured and cut 2" to one side of the vertical seams, top to bottom, and sewed in the pink strip. Then I cut 2" below the horizontal seams and sewed in the pink strips. Then I just bordered the thing and the top was done.

You think they will want this one back? Nice work.

spaghettimom 01-30-2014 04:58 PM

I love the rose sashing- what a great idea. I have a friend who likes to buy panels and add boarders to make into a bed size. The idea of looking thru a window is just awesome. I can't wait to share that idea with her! Thanks!
