A few years ago a friend who had worked with my DH asked him if I might want HER stuff. I said DUH, no brainer here. It turns out she gave me a quilting frame that her dearly departed had made for her. Plus a lot of her stash. The rest she donated to her guild. The reason was that she and her DH had quilted together. He cut, she pieced. He quilted on the frame along side of her. He and she were both retired and until he retired he had never so much as looked at her stuff or her quilts. But retirement made a different man of him. When he died she suffered so much grief that she could no longer quilt. It was so sad, but she seemed much happier with it all out of her house. Now she's involved with the Little Theater and League of Women Voters. She too has become a whole different person.

HOw sad! This friend lost her DH to cancer not to long ago :-( and he let her buy whatever she wanted. they would go on romantic weekend out of town and then he would take her to the quilt stores to go shopping. I think that may be part of why she doesn't want to even see any of it or even what I make with it because of the memories. She said that I saved her life and that it was a relief to have it gone, I hope she really meant it.

What a jackpot! It'll take you weeks just to organize and get to know what you have - a job we'd all love to have. Have fun, and post more pictures when it's organized, so WE'LL know, too!

I am blown away. You are officially now, your own fabric store. I am so jealous!!!

schwanton 03-11-2010 03:39 PM

I see some things I would love to have - Michigan is close to PA is it not? Congratulations! I'm looking forward to seeing some things you make from this awesome gift!

MaryAnna 03-11-2010 04:56 PM

Wow! She's very generous that's for sure! You need to quilt a small quilt as a special 'thank you' to her. Maybe a nice table topper, runner, or wall hanging.
Kind Regards,
MaryAnna

Star, perhaps she had pure joy purchasing all of the stash she gave you and is very happy to have it go to a quilter. Also, I wanted to add that you should not feel guilty if you find yardage that you don't like. You could always donate it to a guild that gives to charities that you care about. Bless you as you make decisions. Linda

Thanx Linda- I didn't really see anything that I didn't like at all , but I did see some things that I would use to make gifts or things that I can swap, trade, or gift to someone. I will definitely be doing that as I go through it.

Wow Star, your mind must be reeling with ideas, and thoughts of all of the possibilities, I hope you get to live an extra long time, so that you will be able to get to all of that fabric. It sure will be nice to not have to go out and buy stuff every time you start a new project. I was gifted a few large black gabage bags full of fabric a few years ago, and I just couldn't believe my good fortune. I sorted it and sorted it, and I have finally fit it all in my sewing room, I had to go out and buy shelves, but now I can see what I have, and I go looking through it for the perfect piece of fabric all of the time. Once you figure out what you have, you will love all of the varity. BTW, I still need to buy fabric on a regular basis. But not as much as I did before.

STAR 03-15-2010 11:43 AM

I am sure I will still buy even if it is just for SQA because I just love all the pretty fabrics!

Irish Jan 03-16-2010 03:18 AM

that happened to me a few yrs ago when i went to an estate sale. I came home with bags and bags and boxes of "stuff" material, sissors, dolls, lace, zippers, ribbons, quilting frame and on and on. I thought it was christmas all over again and never woould have to shop again -ever. But with all of that and to find a place to put it - there is always something I need that I don't have. and got all of this for less than 25 dollars = it was 3 carloads packed. lucky you, I know the wonderful feeling.

STAR 03-16-2010 11:44 AM

WOW Irish Jan you really hit the jackpot there!

Oklahoma Suzie 03-19-2010 03:40 PM
