Uncle Harveys cows & tractor..

1 Attachment(s)
I made this lap quilt for my Uncle Harvey. He has alzheimers now, but his health & attitude are good. He has been a farmer all his life. He loved his cows & his tractor. My aunt gave me 3 of his shirts, so I made the pillows & lap quilt for him. Hopefully he will recognize what they represent, things he loves. I want to tie this quilt, it seems that's what it needs..then off to Uncle Harvey!

Your quilt looks great and a farmer will appreciate the Allis Chalmers orange. I'd suggest machine quilting it as I find it wears a lot better than ties or you could do some of both if ties really appeal to you. I found that just tying meant that after lots of washes, the ties started tearing out and the batting shifted. If your uncle does move to a long term residence (nursing home) their industrial washers may be hard on a tied quilt.

What a sweet gesture on your part! He will love it.

Cute, cute cute! I did the tractor in John Deere green. I find Lori Holt's patterns very nice to do. How about you?

cindy4857 03-26-2014 07:07 PM

Wow you sure nailed it. He will love it. I bet it will make him smile when he's snuggling under it.

How kind and thoughtful of you to do this for your aunt and uncle. I think your quilt is very creative and so appropriate for your uncle. Very nice work.

Lost my mom to Alzheimer's, even if he can't express it, this will bring him joy and comfort. It's a beautiful, sweet gift. I agree on machine quilting and tying combined.

What a wonderful, thoughtful, comforting quilt!

Ellageo 03-27-2014 07:08 AM

Uncle Harveys trator is a Kubota! Hence Kubota orange. The tractor pattern is from Lori Holts 'Quilty Barn Along', the cows, are from Debbie Mum-Baby Bovines.

He will enjoy this. Lovely for him to remember.

YES! This is the one I used...I did change the 'seat' a little. Enjoy! Actually the cows would show better in more contrasting fabrics, but I used my Uncles shirts that I was given...wanted them 100% his shirts.

Retired Fire Chief 03-28-2014 02:45 AM

Your quilt and pillows are adorable, Uncle Harvey should love them. Your fabrics, the tractor and cows - wonderful!

sewbizgirl 03-28-2014 06:31 AM

Oh my gosh! Those cows made out of his shirts are amazing...

Pat of Abington 03-28-2014 06:35 AM

You could machine "tie" this quilt if you use the stitch on your machine for sewing on buttons. I did just that on the quilts I made for my then very young grandsons and they are holding up quite well. Good luck and what a thoughtful idea!

Caswews 03-28-2014 06:51 AM

Oh very cute !! I am sure he will so appreciate it; even if he doesn't say it to you or your family ...
