I am making this for my husband. :D
He loves all things pertaining to the Civil War.

I have been inspired by all of you who have done the URR Quilt.
This quilt top has been a learning experience for me.
I have only sewn a friendship star and a nine-patch block previous to this undertaking.

I have had many days when I ripped out more than I sewed.
I have learned so much in the process. :)

Hubby helped me choose the fabrics and the backing for this quilt. :D
He has a good eye for color. I love his choices.

I do not know how I will quilt it.
Hubby suggested quilt in the ditch.
I want this quilt to hold up to everyday use.

Please give me your suggestions and comments.

Thank you all,
Sandi

Didn't mean for two pics of the backing.

Joan 09-15-2009 07:38 AM

Your blocks are wonderful! You certainly got a lot of practice making different kind of blocks.l

The backing fabric is really special, too!

Lucky husband!

Your underground rail road is really, really nice. I am sure you are proud of your results. That was a ton of work to make this quilt for him. I enjoy learning new blocks. Did you?

It is a very nice quilt for hubby. He must be thrilled!!!

Deara 09-15-2009 07:55 AM

Thank you Joan.
I appreciate the encouragement.
Hubby spied the backing at Hancocks when I was looking at the flannel.
He called me over and said what do you think about this for the back.
I just smiled and said that's it.

Thanks Red.
I am very happy with the results.
I so enjoy sewing and making things for others.
I was very excited when the blocks turned out sorta looking like the ones in the pics. Some were smaller and some were larger, but I enjoyed making them all.
Hubby is very happy. His smile was all I needed to see when I showed him the finished top.

That's beautiful, and I love how your dh helped pick the fabrics!! That's such a special treasure for both of you.

For quilting, I don't know. What was the common quilting method of the day in the late 1800s? Surely someone here knows.

Quilt4u 09-15-2009 08:08 AM

That is just beautiful. You did a great job on it.

Pea Soup 09-15-2009 08:15 AM

It is wonderful to share our interests together.

I would say he has added to my stash more than I have.

This turned out really good and the backing is perfect.

Are you planning on handquilting or machine? Either way I would opt to do SID or better yet 1/4" from the ditch with, perhaps, a decorative design around the dresdin plate, maybe a ribbon and bow or something like that. IMHO meander is too "modern" a look for such a traditional pattern and you did say your DH is a civil war buff, this would be more in keeping with the era. I think you will be very pleased with the results if you do 1/4" stitching from the ditch inside each piece of patchwork. Very traditional.

The quilt top looks wonderful. Your husband will certainly love it. :D I also like the backing fabric. Very appropriate for the time period. Some people are unaware of the purpose for these underground railroad quilts. They were used as maps to guide the slaves from one stop on the underground railroad to the next. The former slaves only needed to remember the sequence of the blocks to know where to travel.

Ninnie 09-15-2009 09:22 AM

Your quilt is beautiful, and I just love the material you choose for the backing!

k3n 09-15-2009 09:32 AM

Your URR is beautiful!!!! I bought the URR book last year, and I started a wall hanging size that was supposed to be a Christmas gift for my mother-in-law. I only did the first 4 blocks, tho.

So I just showed my husband your photo and he loved it!! Acted like he's never seen a URR before!!! LOL So I may be pulling that book out sooner than I'd thought. hehehe

Deara

Your URR Quilt is wonderful - I love it & so will your DH. Love your choice of the colours you've used too.

I have the book by E Burns but to date haven't used it - however I am involved in the Pioneer Blocks BOM here on the board. You ought to take a look they are all so different.

Thank you so much Brazen.
I have spent countless hours working on these blocks.
The time goes by so quickly when you enjoy what you are doing.
I started out doing only the first four too.
I was waiting for my LQS to get the Large Flying Geese ruler in.
I had no experience doing any other blocks except Friendship Star and Nine-Patch.
This has truly been a happy learning experience.

Thank you Tisha,
Fabric does speak to you if you listen.
I have been peeking in on the Pioneer Blocks BOM thread.
I promised myself and hubby I would not start too many projects at once.
I still have my quilt in my avatar to finish.
I have a Christmas wallhanging kit to do, another new concept I will be learning with that.
I also love the Dear Jane thread. Been toying with buying the book and jumping into that too, but promises are promises.
So many things I like and want to do.

GailG 09-16-2009 04:15 AM

Beautiful !! I love your border and sashings. Wish I had thought of that when I made my top (which is now a UFO, unfortunately). Your piecing is perfect.

Justquilting 09-16-2009 04:23 AM

You did a wonderful job your quilt!!
Love the colors.
I have a friend that's doing a civil war quilt!

JRSAY 09-16-2009 04:42 AM

You should feel blessed by the luv you will always get back from hubby.
Maybe becasue it is of an older era fabrics, you should try hand quilting with over-all pattern of Baptist Fan, its half circles and would compliment all those beautiful blocks
happy stitchen
JRSAY :-) :)

Iluv2quilt 09-16-2009 05:08 AM

You did a wonderful job on your URR quilt! The colors are so complimentary of each other. The dresdan plate is beautiful and I reallly like the way you made the sashing and the borders. The backing is perfect for this as well. Beautiful!
