We went down to Cardiff, in South Wales, UK for a week, sadly John was quite poorly for most of the trip, but on the upside I took all my sewing stuff and finished the quilt top, just need to sort the backing out then will get this baby finished and present to the lady I was caring for before DH John fell ill, she doesn't know I have made it for her, so I hope she likes it! She had said she would love a log cabin lap quilt, this is 4' x 6', I am not adding any borders as it is getting too big!

 :D

See the dogs!!

Bit of sheen on this, but hope you see the red setter!

Now how the heck can I 'simply' quilt this??? I don't have much time and don't want to deflect from the pattern, any idea's please???

ckcowl 02-09-2011 02:26 AM

just a swirly all over across the log cabin blocks and echo quilting or stippling around the applique would be striking! it is BEAUTIFUL!!!

I have a Janome 9000 machine which hasn't a very big throat, I can do free motion meander, do you think that would detract from the log cabins, I thought of trying to emphasis the curves created by the 'uneven' block design, but I am scared I will wreck it

Very nice quilt. Quite unique.

mcdaniel023 02-09-2011 02:41 AM

I have done it totally scrappy, just cut up LOTS of strips (think I have enough to make another one!!) what I thought 'went' then threw in a few brights to cheer it up! I was luckily as there are no two fabrics alike touching, not bad going as I just grabbed a strip, cut a chunk off and stitched on totally randomly, every block is different, the colours are much brighter in reality,

;-)

Thanks everyone for your comments

Stunning!!

Laura3 02-09-2011 03:38 AM

That is really beautiful!! Love the applique block in the middle...I would help with a quilting suggestion, but not a strong suit for me. I usually end up with straight lines...

quilterella 02-09-2011 03:38 AM

Beautiful... I too am in the process of a log cabin and would like to quilt it other than echoing the seams. Will be watching this post for suggestions.

plainpat 02-09-2011 03:40 AM

WOW...lovely work & colors are perfect.

Moonglow 02-09-2011 03:41 AM

LoisN 02-09-2011 03:44 AM

What a beautiful quilt! Great job. Don't have any ideas on the quilting, but I know it will turn out great.

LOL unless I do the row seams (boring) I would have a heck of a time doing all those 'in the ditch' I wish I had don QAYG on each block now....

I have been looking through all the topics here, trying to see how everyone else has quilted, I think I will chance doing an all other meander with stippling around applique....hmmm, still will to listen to more ideas, keep them coming pleeeeeze!!

veronajules 02-09-2011 03:53 AM

Wow! I love it with the dogs in it.Very nice!

Darlene 02-09-2011 03:55 AM

That is a beautiful quilt and she will really love it. However you quilt it make it light to not detract from the logs.

jellyrollfabric 02-09-2011 04:09 AM

I literally gasped when I saw this, it is stunning! I love different width log cabins!

ssnare 02-09-2011 04:39 AM

Darlene, there is NO chance of me over quilting it lol!

I have just dug out a Indonesian hand painted Batik in Terracotta, gold and green, which has a very open vine of leaves and flowers, guess I will quilt this from the reverse and echo the pattern all over...tah dah! problem solved, thanks for everyones advice!
:D :D :D

Love this quilt!!

suezquilts 02-09-2011 05:08 AM

Quilting ideas~
I would do Abundant Feathers in log areas, and do some McTavishing around the center applique, making the flowers Pop!
It is a beautiful quilt and the lighter area will show the feathers.
A wool batting will give it some more dimension.

katsewnsew 02-09-2011 05:09 AM

Beautiful! Love the dogs, too!

craftyone27 02-09-2011 05:10 AM

Sounds wonderful, just wish there was a longarmer to do it for me, well above my talents I am afraid!! but love the imaginary image I have in my mind of how it COULD look

QuiltingCompanion 02-09-2011 05:41 AM

Just beautiful. Sounds like you've come up with a quilting idea already, but I would quilt the center applique portion from the front. Use a long long stitch and a bright color thread in the bobbin and SID around that block from the front so you can see where it is from the back. After you 've done the quilting from the back, remove the sid and quilt that area from the front.

sidmona 02-09-2011 05:51 AM

Gorgeous quilt!

I had intended quilting the applique from the front as I don't want to go over it, but great advice...cheers!!
