My name is Corry Geissinger from Okeechobee Florida. I am sending in some photos of the Unicorn quilt I made for my step daughter, Melissa. There is a little bit of a story about how and why I decided to make this quilt for her. Melissa is more like a daughter to me and so very dear to my heart and I had thought one day I wanted to make a quilt for her. Late 2008, two weeks before Christmas her family's home caught on fire and burned to the ground. Melissa and her family lost everything but the clothes on their backs.

Our community was very generous and quickly donations came in to replace their clothes, and most of the household needs. After the holidays Melissa shared with me that she lost all of her unicorn collection in the fire. She felt silly thinking about that but she had been collecting unicorm things since she was a little girl. Unicorn snoglobes and just anything that had a unicorn on it. Early 2009 I decided to make a quilt for Melissa with a Unicorn and fairy theme with plans to give it to her for Christmas.

I found most of my designs for this quilt at Embroidery Library. What a beautiful collection of fantasy designs to choose from. I secretly worked on this quilt for most of the year and finished the quilt in time for Christmas Eve. She was very happy and cried when she opened the gift.

Here are a few photos of the quilt, some closeups of the quilt blocks and the quilt label I made.

Kind regards,

Corry

A beautiful quilt, and a heartstring tugging story. I know she will always cherish this because of the love that it has included in each stitch.

Very beautiful! I can imagine how touched your step daughter was when she opened the gift. Very thoughtful of you.

As a side note, this is the first time I've looked at pictures of another's quilt and seen fabric that I have in my stash. :) I have several of those blue floral prints.

The quilt is beautiful! I'm sure it will be a comfort to Melissa.

It's great that the community rallied to help out. It makes all the difference in getting to a point where you can have something positive to look forward to. My neice and nephew and their respective families lost everything in 2 separate fires last year a month or so apart. When I was shopping for new toys for the little ones, the clerk at Toys-R-Us came back after me before I left and gave me money for them. I nearly cried! It doesn't seem too often these days to find a stranger who cares so much. :)

Love your arrangement of embroidery. What a beautiful gift.
I'm in Stuart, by the way.

JanetM 05-04-2010 03:14 PM

So beautiful and so thoughtful. I really like the way you stitched the unicorns is light thread to contrast with the darker fabrics. They look ethereal.

What basic pattern did you use? It really is a good one for highlighting machine embroidery.

Jim's Gem 05-04-2010 03:37 PM

It's beautiful!! what a special quilt!!!
I'm sure that she will love it and be especially touched by your love!!!

redquilter 05-04-2010 03:53 PM
