I think what is used for boats is called spar varnish. It might be what you are looking for, but I would suggest testing it. For some reason, I remember a slight yellow cast to something I used it on. I haven't had to look for an exterior polyurethane yet, so don't know about that.

Spar varnish is good - I don't think it'll yellow but if it does it'll make the block look aged....and that may be a good thing.

As to the exterior quilt block - just attended a presentation on barn quilts and they suggest using porch floor paint - holds up the best.
