I used some old owl blocks for a quilt as you go. I used a lot of patterns from Leah Day's blog. I enlarged them and used a different one on each block. I changed some a little, and used a traditional feather on the borders. Someone posted that her designs are too dense, but if you make them bigger, they seem to work great.

Those owl are just too cute. My DGD would love them.

That is awesome! I have been very impressed by Leah Day and have learned alot from her tutorials. Thanks for sharing.

Very cute owls, and the quilting is very nice also. I love how colorful they are.

Stunning!
The owls are adorable but the FMQ in the blocks is magnificent.
I love that kind of quilting.

debcavan 09-11-2011 07:43 PM

The quilt is as darling as can be. And you are right, you can make Leah Day's Designs bigger. It just takes less fabric when practicing to practice smaller.

You have done a fabulous job with your owl quilt. It is really adorable.

ploverwi2 09-11-2011 07:52 PM

Your work is beautiful, and I love the colorful and cheery owls. I have Leah's patterns printed out, but I am very intimidated by them. I just have to dive in very soon.

Wonderful work - I am also a Leah fan, thanks so much for posting such a fabulous example of how her work is NOT just for art quilts, although it works on those too. I am immensely grateful for the time and anergy she has put into creating her catalogue of FMQ designs and giving them to us for free. I sometimes copy them exactly and sometimes use them as a jumping off point to create my own spin. Either way, she's an inspiration. Cute owls too BTW. ;-) :D

SewCraftyGirl 09-12-2011 08:49 AM

I love your quilt and all the different quilting. I particularly appreciate your insights on Leah Day's quilting designs. I like her designs, but am not sure I have the control yet for something that dense (that is not a meander). What an easy solution you presented!

slovard01 09-12-2011 09:42 AM

The blocks were made in the 1980's of early 90's, I don't remember. I had blouses out of most of the fabric. It is authentic 70's fabric! The pattern is from Quilter's Newsletter. I don't know which one. It should not be too hard to draft your own pattern from the pictures.

LisaGibbs 09-12-2011 10:00 AM

That is stunning and the perfect owls for my mom's next quilt!! I might have to borrow that one--could you PM me with the pattern info for me to purchase?

Charming 09-12-2011 10:02 AM
