I wanted to make a utility quilt for the car and had this jelly roll laying around. Bought some corduroy yardage from the local thrift store last year and decided to use it for the backing as an experiment. Good for a utility quilt, makes it a bit heavier, and it doesn't slip around. However, I think I used too much tension when I put it on the frame because the edges rippled a bit. Brought the back to the front to bind, which also made a border. Quilted it with my favorite easy 9 patch pattern.

Oh I love your quilt. I like that pattern anyway, and it's perfect for any quilt. It is a really good one for your car. That gives me an idea. lol... I like the type fabrics you used. They will serve well as a utility quilt. :) I love that quilting how it shows on the back side.

I think it came out just fine. I do not see so much rippling. I love the colors you picked.

I always call this pattern a Square in a Square. It is a fun pattern to make and so many variations.

I love your quilt. don't know that I have ever seen corduroy used as a backing though. Did you wash and dry the backing first?

I don't see rippling as a problem here, either. Of course, I am not as picky as some. Your quilt is lovely. Almost a shame to hide it away in a car! But between the quilting and the corduroy backing, it will be nice a warm should you need it. Nice job!

The corduroy was 100% cotton and yes, I did wash & dry it before using it.

I have a long arm so no it wasn't a problem. I think you could quilt it on a domestic machine, especially with the straight line continuous quilt pattern I used. You would just use a walking foot. It actually doesn't seem to add much thickness, but more weight, so I would limit it to a throw size. I bound it by bringing the backing around to the front. I used a walking foot, but my domestic machine had no problem sewing thru all the layers.
I also used Warm & Natural batting.
Another added bonus was it was almost 60" wide, so for throws, no seams!

Thanks for posting the back so we could see the quilting. So clever and easy with a nine patch. I am always looking for ideas on what to put where, so that really helped.

Love your utility quilt, front and back. The front includes my favorite colors, and think the corduroy is perfect for a utility quilt. However, I would have a hard time using this in the car, as it is too pretty to be hid away : )
