This is a picture of a wall quilt I just finished. It is Van Gogh's "Starry Night". I made this for my daughter, this painting is her absolute favorite. She challenged me to make it and I did it. I used glue stick applique, fusible web, satin stitching, and a little machine stitching in the ditch. In all, this project took about 9 months to complete. I hope you enjoy looking at it, as much as I am enjoying showing it off. :D

Maggie, that's an incredible wall hanging! Did you draw a large sketch and piece in all the fabrics from that? Tell us more, please. I'm picturing a big foundation-pieced applique from looking at it, and would love to know how you worked the stitching.

What a beautiful adaptation of a beautiful painting. Simply incredible! Thank you for sharing this with us. There aren't enough adjectives to describe it! :)

Van Gogh would be proud. What a gorgeous quilt.

9 months, huh? Well, by then (hopefully) we'll be moved & setteled into our new home, so I should have a wall all ready for it by then. Yep, I'll take one as well. :D
That's gorgeous!! |
That is so awesome! I hope you enter it in as many contests as you can! Send the pics to some magazines also.
Show it off in more places than just here! And thanks for sharing. It is one of my favorite Van Gogh's also. |

I downloaded an image off the internet. Then, I made that image in a coloring book form with the photo software that I have. I enlarged copies of the picture and taped them together. I put freezer paper over that copy, and I drew out the main features of the painting. I labeled everything, then started to pick out the fabrics. I made a swatch so I would have it everytime I went to the store. The swirls are glue stick applique to give them more depth anf texture. Everything is satin stitched to a muslin background. My daughter picked the brown border, because she wanted it to look like a painting with a frame. Thank you all for the great comments. I think my next project is going to be a little more easy. This one was a lot of work, but well worth the effort. :-)

I'm usually in lurk mode around here, but I just had to say that quilt is so gorgeous I'd love to print off a pic of it to put on my inspiration board. (once I get a sewing room with an inspiration board that is!)

Gorgeous! I like it better than the painting, brilliant job. Did you paper piece it? Yes, we need more information and inspiration please.
|
A true work of art.how did you do that? I'd love to make one like that, my son spends hours at the the Met and Moma, He'd think it was awseome.
|
WOW, WOW, WOW - stunning is an accurate description!
love it! and 9 months of labor for your daughter! image that! |
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :!: :!: :!: :!:
What exactly is glue stick applique? Do you just glue the material on--then stitch them to the background material? The satin stitch would catch the raw edges of two pieces at a time? Do you tuck a quarter inch under? Unless it's basic quilting--I'm clueless. |
WOW. What an inspiration. Tell your daughter I am jealous. It's beautiful. Kyia
|
