What a treasure! Can't wait to see them after they're quilted. And imagine the many hours someone put into these tops.

wow good find

You did good. I love them all. I wouldnt wash them until after they hsvr been quilted. Then soak in a tub sink in oxiclean. You will be amazed how much stuff will come out of them. You will have to drain, the refill the sink several times, then soak the stained one for uo to 24 hours if needed. Drain, then rinse several times till water runs clean. If the fabrics are up to it, you can put the quilt through the spin cycle only in your machine to remove most if the water. I then lay the qjilt flat on the bed to dry.
I would back them with unbleached muslin. Finding a binding fabric to match may be difficult. You may be able to find a vintage piece for that as you will only need half a yard or so. Good luck with them and post pocs of the completed qyilts. |
Hi, hope I'm not being repetitive. If possible I would find someone that can date the tops for you and try to use or locate like fabrics for the backing and binding. The "age" of a quilt is determined by the newest fabric in the quilt. Finding fabrics that at least mimic the age of the other fabrics will help maintain the antique appearance and hopefully in the long run, raise the value of your terrific find. Great find.

I think I would use muslin for backing as they are vintage. Beautiful quilts and what a find. Now they need to be hand quilted.

GO OXICLEAN!

WOW ... you did good ! Beautiful tops, the piecing in the 3rd is amazing
Muslin for backs and a solid or vintage fabric binding would be cool You only need a yard at most for binding Be VERY careful washing them ... if they are hand pieced they are more likely to pull apart. DO NOT put them through a full cycle in your washer, you'll end up with a thready mess on the back. Soak in the tub and rinse well, wring out gently & wrap in a bath towel to absorb more water. You can dry in dryer just a few minutes, but if you can, its best to lay them out on a clean sheet outside to finish drying. :) |
Great find! I would use muslin for the back and a binding to compliment the front.

All of them gorgeous but the orange one is just plain yummy.
