Vintage quilt rescued from the thrift store...
5 Attachment(s)
Last Saturday DH & I were out "thrifting" when I found this quilt. It was very yellowed from old storage stains and looked like it possibly may have even had some water stains. It was picked up by 2 other people and rejected by both before I finally got my hands on it. When I picked it up, the other 2 people turned up their noses and said "it's stained".
But I know better! I've bought lots of vintage linens in my lifetime and I know a nice Oxi-Clean soak does wonders! This is what the quilt looks like now after soaking overnight. It is full-sized, all hand embroidered and hand quilted. There is no label but in the doorway of the house, in blue permanent marker, is written "The Hammill's". I don't know who made this, but it is now in my home and on my bed. Yes, it is small for my queen-sized bed, but we don't care....It's got 3 other quilts underneath it so it's more of a "covering"! :) There are no pulled threads or popped stitches and looks like it has never been used before! |
Wonderful save! Just emptied my box of washing soda, my next purchase will be Oxy-clean. Looks like it did a great job on yout quilt. Thanks for the advice.

What a beautiful work of art.

Wow, that's a lot of work that went into that quilt. Very nice!!
It is a wonderful quilt. So lucky you found it. That was a lot of work to end up tossed aside.
What a masterpiece! Bless you for rescuing it, and thanks for the Oxy-Clean soak.
It's a quilter's nightmare to think that the ton of work and love you put into a quilt might end up cast off. So glad some of them get rescued and revered. |
Oh, wow, beautiful and a lot of time went into that one. Looks good as new to me. Great save!
Exactly what my thoughts were reading the post!!!!! This is a beautiful quilt and look at all of the work put into making it, very.

What a beautiful find. I can't believe someone got rid of it.
Lucky you! It certainly is a beautiful find. Treasure it as the maker obviously did.
Talk about a diamond in the rough! Stained or not, the workmanship is unbelieveable. So glad that you got your hands on it!
Wow so beautiful and clean lol

I have an identical quilt that my Mom started and I finished (probably 30 years later). It was a kit from a "Lee Ward" catalog. It was my first attempt at hand quilting and there are places that I need to repair, but I love it. Glad you have saved the twin to my quilt.
What a absolutely beautiful quilt. It breaks my heart thinking of someone doing all that beautiful work and it ending up in a thrift store.
For goodness sakes who in their right mind would pass that over. It's a very pretty quilt. Lucky you.
What a great find. Why in the world would anyone throw this away?
One woman's trash is another woman's treasure! And I know you already treasure it.:)
Lovely quilt. I can only imagine the amount of time and effort that went into making it. Bless you for saving it.
OH...and I forgot to tell you all the price...$24.95!!!! :)
Oh, isn't it beautiful. So glad it found a home with someone to love it.
Oh my, what a nice job you did cleaning that quilt up. It's a beautiful piece of work. Enjoy.
Glad you rescued that one. It's a beauty.

What a wonderful treasure you found. Sort of wish they could tell their stores but some of them would probably be heartbreaking!! Glad you were able to restore it!
People just don't reeasure labors of love sometimes...it is beautiful!!!!
How gorgeous! and how lucky for you that it was stained!
Beautiful workmanship - it must have taken her/him/them quite some time to complete.
Lucky, lucky you. |
Oh My God when I saw this, it is the same quilt my mother hand-stitched many years ago and I just made a label for. My sister has it in Kentucky, and is bringing it home for Thanksgiving for me and my family to see. So glad you rescued it!
This quilt is just gorgeous. My mom had started embroidering a king size like this many years ago and only just donated it recently because she said she would never complete it.

Amazing save. I can't believe people. Someone spend a huge amount of time and love making this. Thankfully you were wise enough to see its potential and gave it a wonderful home!

Wonderful quilt! Thanks for the tip about how to clean it. I'll now be much more likely to take the chance when I see something stained, but otherwise in great shape.
