Wagon Wheel

4 Attachment(s)
I was so happy and excited to start this quilt and then to my utter dismay, because I didn't follow my rules of: Make one block to test the pattern, I did a lot of work for nothing. Oh well, Here is a story for you.

I saw a sample of the Wagon Wheel in the Confetti book that I just made the, Sunshine and Windmills, out of. It's just a picture, no pattern and I figured I could figure it out and it reminded me of the spiderweb I made some time ago. I pulled out my trusty template and all the Aunt Gracie fabrics I have and started to tear strips, trace the template and cut the patches out.

I cut many patches.

After I made the block, I realized that I needed to have a hexagon shaped block.

I then decided to start over. I know I can use that first block and the other patches that I cut, to make pillows etc for the same quilt. I plan to make a king size, summer quilt, The size of the block will finish at 16.5, so it will go fast.

I searched Block Base for a hex with 12 wedges and found one. It is #272. I pulled it into EQ and deleted all the parts except for three templates and changed them to size 19 in EQ. The templates were the perfect size.

This block has a button in the middle. I cut just a few patches this time lol..I made the block and decided to put the button on too. For the button I picked a blue like in the book. I traced the template and sewed on iron on interfacing (the cloth kind that you iron behind a t-shirt block). I made a slit in the interfacing and turned the button right side out. I then ironed the button on and sew around it on the sewing machine. I love the block.

These blocks are sewed together like a Grandmother's Flower Garden.

Here is a pic of my mistake block and then the first hex and then the hex with it's button.....

Very pretty. Love to see the finished quilt. Hopefully the pieces that you have already cut can be used too? Best wishes.

Beautiful, hope to see the finished project.

I am glad you are finishing it after your error because it is going to be beautiful! I love your fabric and they will look great with the old fashioned pattern. A lot of work but some of the old patterns are just so pretty!

Yes, I agree, some of the old patterns are so pretty and actually timeless. The minute I saw it, I wanted to make it. I finished 5 blocks so far. It looks like I only need to make 36 or 49, for a king size, depending on how it looks on the bed when I try it.

The blocks are finishing at 17.5 inches and will finish at 17, so it shouldn't take much longer since I made my mistakes already lol. I love the blue buttons in the middle. I know I will have to cut half the blocks off to square the quilt or maybe not. Maybe I will just let it be a hex border, that would be different.

huntannette 03-24-2012 09:08 AM

oh wow....such patience...it will look awesome..can`t wait to see it all finished!!

It is going to be beautiful. Great fabrics and colors, great pattern. I would never attempt to make something from a picture. Lots of people do, guess I'm just chicken. You are ding a great job.

Since they're almost Tumbler-shaped maybe she could use them for something like that?

earthwalker 03-24-2012 09:16 PM

Rosy they are just beautiful! I'd not be wanting to cut them when its time to do the edges....just leave the hex ....This is going to be one stunning quilt.

ScrapQuilter 03-25-2012 05:04 PM

Great quilt............ Don't you know there are no mistakes........ just new patterns........ lol

n2scraplvr 03-25-2012 05:41 PM

It'll look fantastic when done! Those Aunt Gracie fabs are just perfect for that pattern. I really love the far left one where the pink wedge meets the dark yellow wedge! Magic happens when the right colors go beside each other! I think this is also a 30's pattern. Great job and gotta love those BIG blocks to finish faster!

You're right, it's a 30ties pattern and made with smaller blocks it has a whole different look. I am just putting them on the board for now but I know I will have to put them on the king bed to arrange them and I will be very mindful of color placement. I can't wait. I keep getting interupted lol. Today I was helping hubby clean but am ready to go do blocks now.

Wagon Wheel Is Done

I can't believe I started this quilt in March and here it is July already. I never take this long to finish a quilt but things got in the way.

I kept working on those blocks every chance I got. I made another mistake putting the blocks together and had to rip but never mind I got it right finally lol

Here are some pics of the finished King Size Wagon Wheel. I left the hex edges instead of cutting the blocks in half and squaring the quilt. I love the look.

I quilted it on the LongArm Monday. I just did swirly loops around the spokes and I like how it came out. I got up at 5 am this morning to bind it. What a job.

Here it is on my bed, it looks so summer and so cool. I used lots of left over piesce to do the backing and it is really patchwork lol....

The rest of the scraps that are left will make tiny quilts for my new puppies, Milly and Emily, they are in another post or check my blog.

Well done. This is going to be so pretty. I like the idea of the hex border.

Looks like a fun project. Be sure to post the outcome.

quilts4charity 07-28-2012 03:54 PM

It's gonna be gorgeous, and I'm glad you aren't a quitter!!!

4EVERquilt 07-28-2012 08:04 PM

Oh My!! that's going to be beautiful!!

mcb1180 07-29-2012 01:04 AM

I've never seen this quilt design before. I can't wait to see the finished product. As for not following the directions, they're just guidelines, no one says you have to follow them word for word.

stitcherlady 07-29-2012 02:01 AM

It is so pretty. So glad you stuck with it, it was well worth it. I would love the hexed border, I think that would look fantastic.

earthwalker 07-29-2012 03:16 AM

It's a beauty Rosy....the quilting really sets it off nicely. Well done!

homecaregiver 07-29-2012 03:38 AM

Interesting pattern and I also love the fabric selections, Please share the finished quilt when you get it completed. Great job in creating something new out of your mistakes.

Pat

homecaregiver 07-29-2012 03:42 AM

Oh WOW this turned out so beautiful. I like the big blocks and your quilting sets it off. I will have to keep this pattern in mind. I have a lot of 30's fabrics that I have collected and this would make a fine pattern for them.

Pat
