I just finished this walker bag for my Mom. I've made several of these over the last few years, each one different. This one I added some decorative stitching and ruching strips to the pockets.

Very nice! Love the colors you chose. Your mom is going to love it. :D

Sue Fish 05-09-2010 08:34 AM

Very nice..where did you find that pattern?

JanetM 05-09-2010 08:38 AM

I made the pattern myself. I just took some measurements of her walker and went from there. The picture doesn't really show the snaps on the sides that hold it on. I make it like an oversized placemat, then add the pockets and the snaps.

How neat, and so pretty

RedGarnet222 05-09-2010 08:51 AM

What a nice gift. I recently pulled something in my knee out gardening and I had to use my dad's old cane to keep the weight off it for four or five days. Boy, was I surprised how little I could do or carry with only one hand. I can't imagine having none because of a walker. It really makes you appreciate little helpers like this.

I love mint green, I am so glad it is back and available in such pretty patterns.

Bevanger 05-09-2010 08:58 AM

I have made some that I donate to nursing homes that are like a tote bag but have ties at the top to tie over the top of the walker frame. I add a pocket to the front and one to the inside so they can put a packet of tissues or reading glasses or whatever in it. They are big enough for a magazine or fold up a sweater and put it in there. Usually bright colors to help brighten their day. Good way to use up scraps. I also make lap robes for them. I don't use batting in them but use flannel on the back an tie them.

Rainbow 05-10-2010 10:21 AM

OH !!!!! OH !!!! Would love to see you do a tutorial for us on that bag....measurements to get us started would be grand.

JanetM 05-10-2010 03:37 PM

Doing a tutorial on this would be difficult saf45 and Rainbow. There are so many different walkers out there, each designed differently.
I just measured my Mom's walker (width of crossbar) and decided what length I wanted and went from there.

I make a basic placemat: sandwich together top and bottom fabric (RS together) with batting.
Stitch all around, leaving an opening to turn right side out.
After turning, topstitch all around to close opening.
The pockets are made in a similar way. Cut the fabric twice the height of the finished size you want, fold in half (RS together), stitch around 3 sides leaving an opening for turning.
After turning, attach pocket to bag closing the opening.

Each one I make has a different pocket design. The one pictured is pieced, but some are embroidered. I just play around with it until I get something I like.

Overall, the bags measure 17.5" wide x 26" long, and the pockets are 13" wide x 9" high.

They really are quite easy to make and with snaps on the sides they are quite secure. They make carrying magazines, newspaper, books, glasses, and kleenex very easy. They also are conversation starters as they do dress up a very functional piece of equipment. The staff and residents where my Mom lives are always waiting to see what "new bag" my Mom has.

If any of you make one, please share pictures okay? It would be a kick if I've inspired any of you. :D
