It's done. :) Last spring I thought about what I should really do with my wedding dress. We had just celebrated our 10 year anniversary, we have only boys and we never got the dress cleaned and boxed. So what should we do with the dress that was sitting in the closet taking up space.

Make it into a crazy quilt! :) :) :)

This is my first crazy quilt ever. And boy cutting that first cut was very difficult! :) I made it only into a wall hanging, as I'm keeping the rest of the dress to make ring bearer pillows for my boys when they get married someday. :) (awwwww....)

There is a blue/purple ribbon on one of the blocks that was the ribbon that held my dear grandfather's wedding ring inside my dress when I walked down the asile. He was so dear to me. He passed when I was 16, so I had to have him walk me down somehow. :) (my first born son is named after him too)

So here is a picture of me in the dress 11 years ago and what it looks like now. ;)

What a great idea--it is beautiful!

You are a beautiful bride! and your wall hanging quilt is beautiful too. What a great way to keep a precious moment. The ring bearer pillows sound like a great way to pass on some of it to sons too.

beautiful! Love it!

You were a very beautiful bride! Your wallhanging came out just stunning! Just think of all the great conversations that will take place when people ask about it...and you know they will!

A beautiful bride made a beautiful quilt! As the mother of sons, I understand, and what a tremendous idea of passing it down for the ring bearer pillows.

Great idea - I have a couple of wedding dresses belonging to my daughter-in-law and my daughter hanging in my guest room closet. I may approach them with this idea (maybe in a couple more years) :-D
I'm always looking for new and different projects!!

DMotyl 04-29-2011 08:50 AM

beautiful job! I love how you have saved the memories with the wall hanging and the ring bearer pillows... :-D

What a beautiful idea!!! I had 3 girls and none of them could fit into my dress, they are all bigger than I WAS.
My dress is still in the cedar chest, un-cleaned, un preserved for 31 years now.

You are a abeautiful bride. That will be so sweet to have for the ring brearers...Also a hanky for the bride, or a baptismal napkin for grandchildren would really be special, if you baptize infants and children....a couple of baptismal/christening gowns for infants. I made our daughters dress, sllip and bonnet. she will be 40 this year, and did counted cross stitch on the hem of her full name, birthdate and baptismal date, then her first 2 children were baptized in her dress also and I did the same counted cross stitch for each of them in the pink or blue thread...and added a tiny ribbon for the appropriate color, therre is so much you could do with your wedding gown...unfortunately I gave mine away to a little 9 yr old deaf and mute girl, but she had so much fun with it, I am not sorry, but would have been nice to have to make the dresses with...

Wonderful adaptation, beautiful!

Very touching story, but I can not believe you make a crazy quilt out of your wedding dress. I imagine how difficult it was to make the first cut.

belmer 04-29-2011 09:14 AM

How precious is that... What a wonderful idea and a wonderful little story about you grandfather.... So sweet!

Your such a beautiful bride and I think your quilt looks wonderful. I can only imagine how difficult that first cut must have been, and I love your idea for using the rest of the fabric for ring bearer pillows.

Jammin' Jane 04-29-2011 10:17 AM

Amazing. What a piece of art!
Beautiful bride! Gorgeous dress! I would have had a really hard time cutting into that dress!
Thanks for sharing!

Carrie Jo 04-29-2011 10:17 AM

You made a beautiful bride... and very nice blocks

Ramona Byrd 04-29-2011 10:28 AM

What a lovely treat this dress will make in your sons' weddings.

But don't forget to put a label on it saying just what you told us, plus name and date.

I see so many lovely wedding gowns in yard sales for almost giveaway, always makes me touch it and wonder about what the original owner was doing now. What kind of life she had with that groom, was she still married to him? Why was it in a yard sale, to be sold for almost nothing.

carolaug 04-29-2011 10:59 AM

Love your quilt!!!now you can enjoy it everyday!!! What a wonderful idea!

Snorky Lvs2Quilt 04-29-2011 11:09 AM

Beautiful bride. Beautiful quilt. My dress was cleaned and boxed over 37 years ago and I haven't looked at it since. I should take it out and think about making a quilt too. I too had only sons so no one to pass the dress on to. Both lovely DILs were not my size. I really like your idea. That first cut would definitely be the hardest............

lbaillie 04-29-2011 11:10 AM

this is just beautiful, I love the colors,

Painiacs 04-29-2011 11:16 AM

Beautiful!!!

marymm 04-29-2011 11:19 AM

I think you should have your wedding photo (and maybe another of you and your husband) printed on fabric and use it on the back as a label. It's really beautiful.

Sandee 04-29-2011 11:26 AM

Great job! I wish I'd thought of doing something like that with mine. I don't have it anymore, so too late now but yours is wonderful!

hobbykat1955 04-29-2011 11:53 AM

Lovely...another idea my sister in law did with hers was to make a christening coat for her first grandchild which then is past onto all the others as they come...
