Weighted Blanket

1 Attachment(s)
I pieced a modified Trip Around the World quilt top, added some backing, and sewed in almost 10 lbs of poly pellets into 3x4 rectangles. My SIL has headaches and insomnia due to a head injury, and I read that this type of blanket might help. I tried it out, and it's especially nice with a cat!

wesing 02-04-2016 08:26 PM

Obviously this quilt comes with a cat scan. I like the idea of extra weight. I hope it helps.

marilynr 02-04-2016 08:38 PM

How did you add the pellets? Very carefully, I would think.

busy fingers 02-04-2016 08:47 PM

Even if the pellets do not work just lying under such a pretty blanket will certainly help her feel "rested".

Grandma Peg 02-04-2016 08:52 PM

Very nice and hope it helps her.

I'll be finding pellets for awhile! I sewed all the lengthwise seams so it made tubes, them funneled 1/4 cup of pellets into each tube, shook them down, pinned them in, and stitched across the width. Then I did the next row and sew on. It was pretty awkward!

Interesting idea. Hope it works for her!

dunster 02-04-2016 11:22 PM

It is certainly very pretty. Let us know if it helps your SIL.

Very pretty. It seems that both your SIL and the cat are enjoying the quilt. Good for you.

DOTTYMO 02-05-2016 12:55 AM

Beautiful quilt and cat inspector.

earthwalker 02-05-2016 01:47 AM

Well done you! Must have been a nightmare with the pellets. It's very thoughtfully made, if I were her I would love it.

DianneK 02-05-2016 04:52 AM

I have read that weighted blankets are comforting for many reasons !

PaperPrincess 02-05-2016 05:06 AM

Very pretty! I have read many people like and are comforted by heavy blankets. Hope this helps your SIL.

redstilettos 02-05-2016 05:20 AM

donnajean 02-05-2016 05:21 AM

Beautiful fabrics made a lovely comfort quilt.

Jordan 02-05-2016 05:37 AM

Nice quilt and hopefully it will help your SIL. By the smile on her face, it seems that the quilt makes her happy. You are a good person to do this for her.

quilterpurpledog 02-05-2016 05:42 AM

Very pretty quilt to rest under and an interesting concept of therapy. I hope it works for her.

red-warrior 02-05-2016 06:26 AM

What a pretty quilt!

#1piecemaker 02-05-2016 06:33 AM

I've never heard of that. I know that your SIL appreciates that you went to such great lengths to help her problem. She and the cat looks very comfortable. I love the quilt. Lovely Spring colors!

Isn't that you under the quilt? Looks like your avatar pix. Its a lovely quilt, but now you MUST make at least a doll quilt version for your kitty. Talk about contentment/ nothing better than getting to lay on a quilt with mommy under it! My cats would agree!

Yes, that's me trying it out. I gave it to Kim this morning and she was thrilled. I'll report back on its effectiveness. I agree, the cat is going to get a little matching one.

Your quilt is very pretty and I like the extra (furry) weight on top.

Bluebonnets 02-05-2016 01:06 PM

It's pretty and a neat idea. Looks like SIL and cat approves.

Boston1954 02-05-2016 02:35 PM

It looks as though the cat adds about another 15 lbs. LOL. It's gorgeous. You did a great job.

JuneBillie 02-05-2016 03:03 PM

That is so pretty, and such a creative idea. I may try to make my little dog one of these.

QUILTNMO 02-05-2016 03:47 PM

how neat!!!hope it woirks for sil!!

greaterexp 02-05-2016 08:54 PM

Aren't you clever! Great quilt and great picture!

quilttiger 02-06-2016 03:45 AM

What a wonderful idea! It has to feel just so comfy and warm. I am not familiar with the poly pellets and I was wondering how the quilt would be laundered?

skypony 02-06-2016 03:50 AM

I love the quilt. the fabrics are so cool. the cat with your friend is just too cute. it made me laugh it was so cute.

skypony 02-06-2016 03:52 AM

very carefully and handwashed. I don't trust those poly pellets. they break tons of needles even if you are careful about the stitching.

answering [ how can it be laundered?]

jmoore 02-06-2016 03:59 AM

very pretty fabrics... and so kind of you to take the extra steps in making it special for your SIL

twinkie 02-06-2016 05:02 AM

What a great idea. PERFECT!!!!

Clarice29 02-06-2016 06:03 AM

Very nice quilt and very nice cat. I have one just like it--cat that is, not quilt.

WMUTeach 02-06-2016 06:21 AM

In my opinion, all quilts should be weighted with a cat! That is one of my best ways to sleep.

institches33 02-06-2016 07:18 AM

There is nothing like a well placed cat! Lovely quilt.

I made one for my 3 yr old grandson who has some sensory issues. He loves it and won't go to bed without his Cars blanket. Helps him sleep thru the night too. Time consuming to make but well worth it.

materialworld 02-06-2016 08:15 AM

Looks cozy. Hope it helps.
