I am sort melancholy on the project I am working on. I lost my sister to cancer this year and I am working on memory quilts for her grand babies. My inspiration is struggling, but I think of those little faces and I want to give them a little piece of grandma to cuddle with.

This is my first quilt top for little Levi. Quilts that are 100% jeans can be heavy so I mixed this with jeans, sweatshirts, flannels and a couple of tshirts. I could never get the blocks laid out in a way that I liked so I just blindly grabbed them to put the top together. I see things that I would like to change, but the layout is as good as when I tried to plan it. :) I used jeans for 3" border to frame everything

I think I have a hard time because I want quilts to be "pretty" ha ha and jeans and flannels are not girly and pretty... but Levi is not a girl.

I just wanted to show someone but want to keep the surprise for Christmas. Thanks for looking

I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my sister too soon, too. I can see that this endeavor would be difficult at times. The pain of the loss never goes away, but it comes less often with time.

The quilt looks perfect for a little boy. I'm sure he will treasure it.

What a thoughtful gift to your sister’s grandchildren and a treasure for them to have. What a difficult loss for you... I hope you feel some peace as you assemble these little quilts in her memory.

lindaschipper 10-22-2018 04:15 AM

The loss of a sister can be difficult. Just know that wherever she is, she is smiling down on you for doing this in her memory.
I lost my sister to throat cancer in 2014....not a day goes by that I don't think of her, want to pick up the phone to ask her something or have her appear in a dream for only a moment. I know in time that this will ease.. She is missed.

lynnsv 10-22-2018 04:45 AM

sorry for your loss, but look at the memories that will last

lorimax5859 10-22-2018 06:11 AM

What a wonderful thing you are doing for them and you. I know emotions are stirred up, but you get to surround yourself with all the good memories while you pass them on in the way of a tactile quilt for her heirs. So sorry for your loss and prayers for comfort as you keep her memory alive.

I am so sorry for your loss, I lost 4 relatives at the beginning of the year, 3 to cancer, but what a great way for your sisters grandkids to remember her, now every time they cuddle under their quilt they can think of her. thank you for sharing

I'm so sorry for your loss, but you are creating a wonderful gift for those children.

Ellen 1 10-23-2018 10:50 AM

I like the simplicity of this quilt and the fabrics used are the important part. I hope you will quilt this a little heavy because of the type of fabrics used so it will hold together for years and years. I think the “reach and grab” placement plan of the fabrics is a good one. :-)

solstice3 10-23-2018 12:08 PM

Whatever you do will be a blessing to them

RuthiesRetreat3 10-23-2018 12:37 PM

Great idea using jeans for binding. It will really hold up well to 'boy usage' and so will last for a very long time. Good thing to keep grandma close while growing up.

meyert 10-23-2018 01:53 PM

Thank you everyone for your kind words

RuthiesRetreat3 - - my sister's name is Ruth. made me smile when I saw your post

Ellen 1 - please help me understand what you call "quilt a little heavy" I would like to do all that I can to help this hold up. I will be putting flannel on the back and use Warm Company's Warm and Plush batting

I appreciate your input

cashs_mom 10-23-2018 02:10 PM

I'm so sorry for your loss. I think the quilt is lovely and perfect for a little boy.

Sweet and so special....turned out so adorable. So sorry to hear of the loss of your sister. Hugs!

quilterpurpledog 10-24-2018 05:17 AM

I am empathetic about the loss of your sister. I also lost my only sister to cancer. Though it has been 22 years, I still miss her. I think the making of memory quilts for her grandchildren will bring peace and hopefully inner joy. Your sister would have loved your generosity. Just think about one day at a time-that is all God gives you in your walk of life.

barny 10-24-2018 02:38 PM

I join the rest of these folks, so sorry for you and her other loved ones. They will love these quilts.

Taughtby Grandma 10-25-2018 04:21 AM
