i kid you not. it was less than half dry, but time ran out so i took it to my friend waterlogged. she's a good friend and has a sense of humor. she chucked it into her dryer while we feasted.

It's beautiful!! I'm sure your friend understood perfectly and didn't think anything about having to throw her gift in the dryer

Lynda in TN 12-25-2008 03:54 PM

Patrice, I would not have minded throwing it in the drier at all! I thought the first pic of one block was a huge quilt...but the whole thing is just fantastic. I have seen a number of beauties you have done and done well.

MAXIES2 12-25-2008 04:20 PM

Thats a lovely quilt and beautiful colours, I am sure your friend will treasure it.
Katherine

Oh I love it. Red is my favorite and you do such an excellent job Patrice. Only hope I can do half as well as you.

Cathy M 12-26-2008 12:48 AM

Outstanding Patrice!! And really, you wanted the quilt to be nice and warm to wrap around her shoulders. That way, it was like a hug from you :):)

Izy 12-26-2008 01:20 AM

And here was I thinking Patrice was being a 'wet blanket' about xmas!!!

Wow what a beauty, well done for finishing it in the 'nick' of time

Fantastic quilt!!!!!

the block is Indianapolis, dating from 1916 or earlier. it's a bit tricky because it has y-seams at two stages of assembly, and in the last go-round, several seams come together at the joint of a y. BUT ... it isn't as tricky as it looks - IF you remember to not sew all the way to the edges of patches that will join at a y. (guess who forgot and had to reverse-engineer about half her blocks. )

i found the block in a back issue of Quilters Newsletter Magazine (Jan-Feb 1995). i bought a CD (QNM Block Factory) last year that has the patterns from issues published between 1995 and 2000. (If they've put out a CD with issues from later years, i haven't been able to find it.)

it's also included in Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns and the Block Base software you can get to go with the encyclopedia.

i haven't found any links to totally free patterns for it, but there has to be one somewhere. :?

Beautiful.

My guess would be that she wanted to dry it right away so that she could snuggled up with it. :)

Quiltinsolitude 12-26-2008 06:37 AM

A quilt like that inspires me to live to be 100 . . . because maybe, just maybe . . .if I have another 40 years or so and practice very, very diligently . . .I just might be able to create something as beautiful.

Did I say that's a simply gorgeous quilt???

bluebird 12-26-2008 07:30 AM

Beautiful quilt and love the colors :D

Bevanger 12-26-2008 08:08 AM

you and Loretta are very kind, and waaaaaaaaaaaaaay to hard on yourselves. the single most important step in putting together any block for any quilt is this: BELIEVE YOU CAN DO IT.

were you born knowing how to walk? to talk? to drive a car? noooooooooooooo you were not. you had to make up your mind that you could learn, then set about the business of doing just that.

you may not get it exactly right the first few times, but that's ok. practice on scraps ... or on those fabrics you look at now and just know you must have been drunk, stoned, or otherwise temporarily insane when you bought them.

if you say you can't, you won't. when you say you will ... you will.

Riley 12-26-2008 12:23 PM

Absolutely, positively FABULOUS!!!

I KNEW I SAW THAT PATTERN SOMEWHERE..... Free pattern called Four-Patch Christmas Star at http://www.freepatterns.com/list.html?cat_id=438 - It is just the block, but the same as the Indianapolis just in Christmas fabrics!

patricej 12-27-2008 03:03 AM

awesome!!!! there are some differences, but the free pattern is very, very close. thanks for doing the research. :-)

beachlady 12-27-2008 06:45 AM

That free pattern site is nice - I signed up - hope I do not get lots of junk emails though.

scrap_lover09 12-27-2008 06:48 AM

Beautiful!! And I am sure it will make an even better memory bringing it wet! You gals can laugh about that part for years to come.

sewnsewer2 12-27-2008 07:02 AM

What a beautiful job you did! I'm sure she was just tickled pink. I know I would be, it's beautiful!

Absolutely stunning!!!

b.zang 12-27-2008 11:21 AM

Well, at least she knows it's washable!

Lovely block - brave you for taking it on as a gift. Salaam.

pal 12-27-2008 02:07 PM

Patrice, that quilt is absolutely gorgeous!

Do you always wash your quilts after you finish them? What if something happens in the wash? What if something happens in the dryer?
