I was in a hurry to get his wallhanging done and didn't do any quilting in the borders. As you can see it needs something to get it to look right.

Can I chance doing freemotion now that it is bound, or should I consider embroidering some snowflakes (through the three layers) to take up the slack in strategic areas...

Does anyone have experience in things like this?

Snow flakes sound great. Its very cute and will be much enjoyed I am sure. Also you could hand embroider if you do this down the sides a scroll design going through only the top layer which isnt hard to do and pull down with french knots every so often to give it the tucked quilt look on both sides.. Using 3 strands of thread so it stands out more.

I've never tried to put anything in after the binding is on.
I've taken many apart :oops:

Also what I've been doing is putting a sleeve on the bottom of my wall hangings & putting a dowel in it for weight!
So they don't curl!

I have found that if you don't quilt evenly over all the quilt it will do this. I don't know about the free motion now that the binding in on. I'm sure you will get some good advice from others though.

Mamagus - I have free motioned borders, and in the quilt body, after binding on small wallhangings such as yours, and a couple of crib quilts. I had no problem at all, but was careful not to quilt too heavily.
I had made the items before I had a machine I could FMQ on, and tried at first on something which I wouldn't too upset if it all went wrong - but it didn't!

If the quilting is done evenly across the entire border, you should have no problems. By evenly, I mean the same amount of stitching throughout. Perhaps a diagonal cross-hatch pattern or something along those lines could work. An evenly spaces meander could also work.

Don't know about quilting after the borders are on, but I love the wall hanging! :D

This is so cure and fun. Maybe if you just bead a few places for shine, that will be all you think it needs.

I think either way would work, the FMQ will depend on how even your front and back are, I think that snowflakes would give it a little extra something though!
