My mom bought this kit "Bling" for me for my birthday. There is about 15 yards of beautiful batik fabric. The problem, the company didn't send the templates along with. After contacting the company they sent paper templates with no instructions as to how to put this together. They said for another $25 I could purchase the additional instructions, but I don't think that's too fair after paying $160 for the kit. Any suggestions on a pattern to make with this material??

Pretty fabric--and no instructions   . Kits around here usually have fabric included.

I saw a beautiful braided quilt done with bright colors like this.

can'tbelieve you paid this price and no pattern

good luck

That fabric is beautiful. Did it come with a picture, that you could post?

joeyoz 09-12-2009 07:23 AM

OOOH OOOH OOOH!!! You could give it to me!!! LOL

It's absolutely beautiful. Whatever you do with it will be stunning. Maybe a New York Beauty or Mariners Compass. (Those are just a couple I want to tackle someday)

That's awesome. It looks like they put strips together and cut them on a 45 degree angle. WOW! I can see why you bought the kit. BEAUTIFUL. There's just something about batiks that makes my heart flutter. LOL :) :) :)

bearpaw 09-12-2009 07:35 AM

Gorgeous fabrics!! I don't understand how they can sell a kit without instructions. If it's only fabric, wouldn't it just be a fabric bundle or something like that. I would definitely complain. That's alot of money for no instructions. I hope you find a great pattern to show off that fabric!

allisonirons 09-12-2009 07:36 AM

very pretty fabric :)

Here's a picture of the pattern - diamonds inside of diamonds, not done with strips as the other one suggests.

Thank you! I was hoping someone here would have a suggestion as to what pattern I could use with it. :D :D

Ninnie 09-12-2009 07:44 AM

that is a beautiful pattern!!
I would have to suck it up and order the instructions at 25.00 I for one think it would be worth it,and you would always have the pattern.

OOOHAAAH! That's even prettier. I would call and complain. That was a lot of money for them not to sent the pattern with the kit. You paid for the WHOLE thing. Not just the fabric. But, whatever you decide to do with the fabric, it will be beautiful.

I'm sure I'll break down and order the instructions, just needed to vent a little. I can't think of any other pattern to use, been searching the internet and can't come up with much of anything striking.

Quilt4u 09-12-2009 07:48 AM

I have no idea but they are beautiful.

I agree with a Mariners Compass, it would be stunning in those colours..good call joey!

suzic46 - I was just looking through the current issue (October/November) of Quilter's Home Magazine and thought of you immediately!!

There are two patterns that I think would work with your fabric! One is called Dandelion Wine and the other Batik Cascade.

If you're interested, let me know, after I'm finished reading the magazine, I can send it to you. :D

I can send you the pattern for the braid if you need it. It would probably even work for any scraps you have left after your diamond top is completed

dvseals 09-12-2009 09:51 AM

Gorgeous fabrics and first thing that came to my mind was "Bargello" ;)

SulaBug 09-12-2009 09:56 AM

love all of the bright colors. I too,
think you definately need to get the
pattern!! It should have come with it.

Suzi, just got back from this link. It's awesome. Your mom paid way over what this site is charging for the same thing. These are some awesome fabrics for sure! Can't wait to see what you make

huggyface 09-12-2009 10:18 AM

I'm not an expert (that would be the understatement of the century), but isn't this just essentially a trip around the world sort of, but on point?? Some are the batik squares, some are the black squares, and some are a batik square with a black border. Wouldn't you just cut the squares, assemble the bordered ones, then put it together row by row with the triangle ends to make it on point?

Lisa_wanna_b_quilter 09-12-2009 11:21 AM

I saw a great bow tie quilt with brights and black. The ties were done in super bright colors with the off corners being black. It was laid out on the diagonal in different colored rows. It looked awesome when it was finished.

Bargello would be beautiful too!

Okay, that clearly looks like a pattern package to me. What is a pattern after all but instructions? Surely it's not just templates. IMO you should ask to speak with a manager and say that you expect a kit to include the instructions. I mean, that's basic.

I'd threaten to send it back if they refuse to send instructions, but if they're so low they can swindle you out of instructions, they might not refund the money. Of course, if your mom paid with a credit card, she could dispute it.

I don't have a pattern suggestion, sorry. I think that diamond pattern would be just right.

LindaM 09-12-2009 12:34 PM

Love batiks too!

I've picked up the book "Batik Gems" by Laurie Shifrin (http://www.connectingthreads.com/boo...s_BD44895.html) with wonderful ideas that make me drool :) Love the book!

A lone star/blazing star would look wonderful too!

sewaholic 09-12-2009 02:14 PM

Jewel box always looks good.

nursie76 09-12-2009 02:20 PM

The link that you posted says in the directions the kit is $85 and the book is $14.95. It might be cheaper to order the book, just a thought.

Beautiful fabric, and I am sure it will be so beautiful no matter what you do with it.

I love the braid quilt. Could it be made with fat quarters? I collected them over the summer while traveling. I think I have about 24 now. Lots of beautiful batiks.

mcdaniel023 09-12-2009 02:35 PM

I can't believe you didn't get the instructions. But, the fabric sure is beautiful. Good Luck. Can't wait to see the finished product.

lyndawn 09-12-2009 02:36 PM

I think it would look great as a sampler quilt with the black as the background.

But, that being said, if the instructions should have been included in the kit (is it really a "kit" if they aren't) I'm the type that would call and raise holy h*** until they gave me what was paid for.

tnjacke 09-12-2009 02:51 PM

The picture of the quilt posted in McCall's and the picture on the packet are NOT the same quilt or design. It looks to me like the "kit" came from Sew Batik. I buy 2-3 kits a year from Bruce and Diane at Sew Batik and have always gotten written instructions with the kits. They DO NOT send templates or rulers.
I would make sure I didn't have the written instructions and if not contact and ask for them again. Maybe even include a photo of all the pages of the packets so they can see what is missing.
I have been dealing with them for at least 3 years as I love their hand dyed batiks and have never known them not to include the pattern for their kits , if it specifies "pattern included" . I have purchased kits from them that the pattern was in a book or a copyrighted pattern packet that I had to purchase, but they always had it clearly marked.

Hopefully you are able to resolve this and have a beautiful quilt.

I agree. It just doesn't make sense that a kit would be sold without instructions. Something seems wrong there. Well, the fabric is stunning anyway! How fun!

carrieg 09-12-2009 04:06 PM

If I read the picture posted of the pattern, at the bottom of the pattern, it states 'kit includes pattern and fabric from SewBatik'. I assume pattern includes instructions.

I will say I have purchased kits from Fons and Porter, but it clearly states the instructions are in xx issue of their mag.

It is gorgeous fabric!

Bevanger 09-13-2009 03:58 AM

i don't know, but it sure is pretty fabs. :D

Iluv2quilt 09-13-2009 08:29 AM

The kit came with instructions for the setting diamonds, minus the templates to put the blocks together, I contacted them for the paper templates. They sent them but no instructions as to how to put the diamond blocks together. I will contact them again, maybe my kit was missing something that should have been included. Anyway, I love the fabric and am looking into other possibilities for it, but haven't given up on the diamond idea yet. Thank you all for your help. :D :D

Grandma Cindy 09-13-2009 03:31 PM

I think they forgot to include the book. Does she have the charge on a credit card, maybe you might have to return it and they would loose the total sale, since there is no book included.. The site indicates the Kit and book is under $100?
