My guesstimate would be 1939 vintage, as that's the year they were married and I suspect it was part of her original trousseau or gifts.

I still have it ... and it's been washed many times and still looks lovely. Though now it only gets TLC

I agree. I had one as a child (not the same design but the same chenille). I was born 1944. I also remember having a bath robe made of this wide spaced chenille. Its a treasure, to be sure!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Looks like a chenille crib bedspread along the line of what my little brothers had on their cribs in the 50s. :)

Yes! I remember Mom having a bath robe made with the same chenille. We also had a bath mat in chenille .... and lots of bedspreads.

Great link provided earlier in this thread about the history of chenille and how it got started.

Then as time went on, the concept of chenille changed with closer rows, looking more continuous and less of the muslin/cotton showing thru. And too, as time went along, the tufting of the chenille got shorter.

This is an old chenille bedspread. It could be for a child's babybed, the design looks like it. Depends on the size, but I have seen these before.

I agree! A chenille crib spread. Children remained sleeping in cribs until they were older, sometimes 3-5 yrs. old. I sold one on eBay a while ago, seems it went for around $20. Mine had a fawn on it. Buyer was tickled to get it. Mostly nostalgic value.
PS After viewing the website, guess I let it to way too cheap! Can't imagine asking $199. for a child's spread tho'.

I have a chenille bedspread (still) from when I was first married in 1959. I also remember my mother having one in the mid 1940's. I am teaching my DGD to make chenille spreads. FUN!!!

My thought too.

MargeD 08-27-2011 07:04 PM

My first thought is that it looks like chenille, possibly part of a larger chenille bedspread.

Bev 08-28-2011 06:50 PM

It's chenille. I have an old one from the forties with peacocks on it. Very bright and, some might say, tacky looking. But I really love it. I've almost used it to death. 8-)

It's a chenilla bedspread. I had one in red & white when I first got married in 1954. LOL I'm vintage!

Marvel 08-30-2011 04:41 PM

This has the look of chinelle work. Probably dates circa 1945-50 is my guess.

Quiltinelaine 08-30-2011 04:52 PM

My Mom had one too - around the 50's. I sure would love to have that spread now. I remember that she always had it on her bed. Seems like I remember alot of lint coming off it:: LOL

A little off subject, but I just LOVE your avatar!

It does look like a chenille bedspread we had that when I was a kid. They sell them at The Vermont Store online and they are not cheap. Take a look at the site and it'll give you an idea for size. Sue

ging10ging 09-02-2011 04:05 PM

I forgot they also always had a lot of lint I was glad when they came out with other bedspreads and I could afford to buy it. Sue

It is a chenille bed spread and it is old. A lot of them were hand made.
