I was given this quilt as a gift. Im not sure it is even a quilt, I was told they bought it from an auction and that it was really old. Thats all the info I have on it. Can anyone help me out? What kind is it, what era, ect.? It has a raised stitching with fringes to create the bird design, never seen anything like it. Thank you!!

It looks like needle punch or part of a chenille spread.

QuiltE 08-26-2011 07:05 AM

It's an old chenille bedspread. My Mom had one similar (different pattern) but the same cotton backing with chenille strips set apart. Same colours even.

My guesstimate would be 1939 vintage, as that's the year they were married and I suspect it was part of her original trousseau or gifts.

I still have it ... and it's been washed many times and still looks lovely. Though now it only gets TLC

QuiltE 08-26-2011 07:05 AM

duplicate thread!

QuiltE 08-26-2011 07:06 AM

triple thread ... I;ve posted to another one of the three!

isnthatodd 08-26-2011 07:07 AM

What size is it? It looks like a type of cheneille.

mlgrimes6642 08-26-2011 07:08 AM

Thank you all! Now at least I know what to call it. I had been trying to research what it is but sure made it hard without a name.

kellen46 08-26-2011 07:09 AM

What you have is a chenille bedspread. They were popular during the mid century. I used to have one with a peacock on it as a child. It is made a design punched into muslin with a cotton thread and then everything is washed to secure the thread by shrinking the fabric around it. It does not look like what we call chenille now days. Here is a link with some information.

I love this! Thanks for sharing it with us.

How large is it?

mlgrimes6642 08-26-2011 07:16 AM

It is appox 3ft wide and 4ft long. So you all think its like the 1940s era?

0tis 08-26-2011 07:24 AM

I love Chenille - that is what it looks like to me. When I see Chenille I think of my grandmothers - very comforting.

It is so cute. I have learned to call them "spreads"

LindaC 08-26-2011 07:35 AM

We call it candlewick bedspread here.

It's so cute!

What a nice vintage chenille cover. Nice!

Ramona Byrd 08-26-2011 10:16 AM

It's a lovely old chenille bedspread. Used to see a lot of them when I was a child (I'm 77) but they went "out of style".
I still have my mother's chenille housecoat, warm and comfy. Still wear it but it goes to the dry cleaner more often than the washer, and one of my DDs has her name on it.

Lacelady 08-26-2011 10:45 AM

When I was growing up in the UK, I knew these as Candlewick Bedspreads, they were embroidered by hand with thick cotton, and cut into tufts. Later on, there were machine made versions.

A friend gave me a beautiful pink bed jacket that is made from chenille... I treasure it..

mlgrimes6642 08-26-2011 10:52 AM

Does it have any value? Trying to decide if I should use it, and if so how to make sure I preserve it.

Connie in CO 08-26-2011 11:20 AM

I have a bedspread that was my mothers for a full bed.

mlgrimes6642 08-26-2011 02:46 PM

I have since posting this been told that there is another bedspread exactly like this one for sale online. The link is http://www.antiquequilts.biz/199orLessPg2.htm
It still does NOT have any information on era or who made it, ect. So keep the info coming! Thank you everyone, this is a new area of interest for me and has been great to have such kind help and advice!

Muv 08-26-2011 03:05 PM

Yes, it's a candlewick bedspread. Chenille here is material with an all-over pile, an effect similar to velvet, but made with a velvety cord, and more common on tablecloths.

shirley35 08-27-2011 04:14 AM

It's a chenille spread. I remember seeing chenille in the 1940's.

I agree. This is exactly what it is. I grew up with chenille bed spreads and this is exactly what they looked like. They also tickled your nose when covered up a night. LOL

ka9sdn 08-27-2011 04:30 AM

My mom used to have chenille spreads on all our beds and that was in the 50's.

Charleen DiSante 08-27-2011 04:35 AM

By the time I was a teen in the 70's these were appearing in 'junk shops' and salvation army bins. Hehehe, now they are antiques. Whoa! What does that make me? Looks like a child size chenille spread. Pretty.

QUILTNMO 08-27-2011 04:41 AM

looks like something my mother had a chenelle

Izy 08-27-2011 05:16 AM

In the U.K. these used to be known as Candlewick Bedspreads..so soft and fluffy!

ShirlinAZ 08-27-2011 06:29 AM

My Mom used a chenille spread very much like that on my crib. I was born in 1949. I still have my spread stored away in the cedar chest.

rwilso2 08-27-2011 06:50 AM

This brings back memories. It is a chenille bedspread. This one is a childs. They were still around in the 50's and 60's (they may have been old then) at my grandmothers house. I loved them. I had one for years but they don't come in King size.

janrose 08-27-2011 07:57 AM

chenille. i also had a chenille bedspread with a peacock on it as a teenager. still have part of it. they would be for sale and hung on clotheslines outdoors all over mo. and ark. at tourist shops.
