hello all I am stumped! I bought this panel for a christmas gift for my father and want to make a lap quilt for him out of it but I dont know what type of blocks to put around the different panel squares? any ideas? there is a pattern that goes with this panel but you have to buy about a yard of 5 other fabrics and that is beyond my budget for one christmas gift.

blueangel 09-08-2011 04:22 PM

That's a cute panel.

erstan947 09-08-2011 04:24 PM

You can use the panel as the center and then keep adding borders until you get the size you want. You can choose fabric colors the bring out the colors in the panel. Like a barn red, black, greens, tans, etc. Love this panel:)

this was my thought, as well

tammy cosper 09-08-2011 04:32 PM

This is a nice panel. I look forward to seeing what you do with it.

Cybrarian 09-08-2011 04:33 PM

The borders are a good idea, if it were me I wouldnt want anything overwhelming the panel or detracting from it. Another possibility would be a thin then just a little wider inner borders then simple 4 or 9 patch blocks and an outer border depending on the size of the panel or flying geese blocks, but simple and somewhat Americana to go with the style of the panel.

jansquiltn 09-08-2011 04:35 PM

How about some stars.

Glassquilt 09-08-2011 04:49 PM

You could have some blocks in a border - maybe the corners and 1 or 2 on each side.

MoanaWahine 09-08-2011 04:53 PM

At the moment, I am not sure. Have to think about it for a bit. A few years ago, I did six different quilts for Christmas. Each of them started with a panel. Some more simple while others more complex. No matter what I did, they turned out great. Will have to dig up the pics and let you see. I know one of the quilts had Court House style blocks and one had a different layout for a 9 patch. No matter what I put with the panels, they seemed to work great.

Granny Quilter 09-08-2011 04:53 PM

It is going to be great, that is a fun panel to work with. I wish my dad was still alive to make a quilt for.

purplemem 09-08-2011 05:00 PM

I would like the center panel in the middle, and checkerboard blocks around it, then use the other four panels for the corners.

Painiacs 09-08-2011 05:31 PM

Love the ideas! Use what u have if possible! Otherwise I buy from here! Cheaper! Lol

carolaug 09-08-2011 05:39 PM

Wow...love the panel! I agree with the others....I would add a 4 patch and a border around it.

dtippens 09-08-2011 05:44 PM

wow very nice!!! I would like to have 2 of those panels
where did you find them at? My daughter wants me to make
John Deere. quilts for the boys bunk beds . That would be
perfect.

Phannie1 09-08-2011 05:44 PM

What if you cut the panel into three blocks and then add more blocks that have a farm theme or vegetable theme or stash or frame the panels with same. I could see this with a corn and potato or even tractors. Where did you find this panel?

Tartan 09-08-2011 05:53 PM

Love the panel! I think green/tan log cabin blocks around the outside would look nice but depends on how big you want it to be. I think the old fashioned block would look good with the antique tractors.

I think a simple pattern around it, like Log Cabin or Rail Fence, would be really nice.

suebee 09-08-2011 06:12 PM

I love it too. Its beautiful.

tealfalcon 09-08-2011 06:15 PM

love this panel....here is what i would do with it....i would do a thin red border then a piano key border with several colors....then i would put 4 ohio stars in the corners with a wide border whatever size i made the ohio stars...it will be great no matter what

kristen0112 09-08-2011 06:19 PM

I would cut the center picture out use that as the center of the quilt. I would make a pieced border around the center panel. Then use the other panels on the corners maybe using them for the center of a star.

IrelandDragonQuilting 09-08-2011 06:28 PM

I see windows! ;) I think it would make a great window type of quilt...

I love it. This is what I used with the deer panels. You can sure make lots of borders and mix the panels in with other squares the same size.

That was my thought. Love to see what you do with the panel. It is so neat. Would love one like that for my husband.

lyndaloo 09-08-2011 07:19 PM

That is a beautiful panel!

SMR 09-08-2011 07:22 PM

Absolutely love the panel. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

Melinda in Tulsa 09-08-2011 07:54 PM

I just showed your panel to my DH and he said to send it to me!!!!

barking-rabbit 09-08-2011 08:00 PM

Vegetable fabric borders.

Melinda in Tulsa 09-08-2011 08:02 PM

Just looked it up on ebay and hubby said to buy it! Thanks for the info!

Susanna10 09-08-2011 08:04 PM

that is a beautiful panel. I agree with just adding borders of different sizes until you get the size you want.

That is what i would do to. I just finished making a quilt where I cut the panels apart and added theme blocks to it.

kateyb 09-08-2011 08:08 PM

If you have a stash pick up colors from the panel and make blocks that are farm themed, such as, churn dash, whole in the barn door, windmill. If you can do machine applique or mahine/hand embroidery you can do farm animals in some blocks to surround the panel.

Jammin' Jane 09-08-2011 08:43 PM

Cut it apart...and start. It'll come to you as you add the borders! There were lots of great ideas on this post! Please show us what you come up with! Have fun with it!

Oksewnsew 09-08-2011 09:29 PM

How about make Log Cabin blocks to fit the blocks, or if you have to, add a sashing around the farm pcs. Just an idea.

That's exactly what I would do, using the four smaller panels for the corner around the larger one.

BETTY62 09-08-2011 11:03 PM

That's a really nice panel. I like the suggestions you have already received.

kiffie2413 09-08-2011 11:05 PM

What a nice panel that is!! I look forward to seeing what you do with it...

QM 09-08-2011 11:17 PM

I love your panel.

What I would do is cut the panel into it's 5 pieces, with scrappy flying geese on a plain background between and outside the smaller ones, with larger ones along the larger section, so they come out even. One could do the same thing with practically any simple block. Of course, you could use simple strips of fabric. Whatever you do, I think it is likely he'll love it.

Here are a couple of the quilts that I did before. I would take this panel and cut it apart. I like to have things off center in a way so I would put the main panel in the top left. Add some filler blocks, traditional types to go with the theme of the panel. Then in the bottom right side of the quilt, put the four panels to form the corner. 2 along the bottom, 2 going up the side. I am thinking this would give the four panels more of a close up view with the main panel set to look like it is in the back ground. Kind of the way I see them as they are now. The four small panels are very up close while the barn panel is set back a little. Just a thought.

Just a simple panel with a 9 patch going aroun it all.

Here I used what I believe is a Court House block to filll in the quilt.
