What to do when you scorch your quilt gift??? Hang the stockings, add gifts

After my little mini Christmas tree quilt was finished and I added the binding I guess I had the iron on toooo hot and I did a great job of scorching it. The background fabric was some prequilted fabric - I thought, but actually it was embossed to look like it was intricately quilted and it was some kind of polyester fabric which scorched and kind of melted. Well I tried everything possible to get the marks out but nothing worked so finally I just fussy cut some little stockings and gifts and hung the stockings and put the gifts under the tree and up the side. The scorch marks are down under.....down under all the cute little gifts and stockings. It looks real busy but then again it's Christmas.

So...what did you get in your stocking or gift? Just scorch marks....hahahaha

Oh are you clever. What a wonderful solution and I can see none at all.

Very cute! I scorched a block in a quilt and ended up having to pick out the block and replace it. I think you did a nice job on saving that cutie.

Baloonatic 12-12-2013 03:10 PM

That is just perfect, you've made a 'mistake' into an even BETTER little quilt!
Talk about making lemonade!!! :D :D :D
I've got to ask... I think the quilt looks like it is under 12" on each side -- so HOW
did you get such perfect little detail on the stockings and the ribbons on the gifts??

tessagin 12-12-2013 03:13 PM

Yep that's what you do. It is adorable!

katier825 12-12-2013 03:19 PM

I just fussy cut the stockings and gifts from some fabric in my stash. Sometimes I feel a little guilty about buying fabric without a purpose in mind but man was I glad I found this in my fabric closet. It was from a few years ago.

Cute and great save.

If ever you have a problem with scorching, and it's not burned... this is going to sound crazy but it does work...
Fill a bowl/basin with tepid water, then add several denture tablets. Put the affected area of your project in the water with the denture tabs. Let is sit over nite. In the morning chances are your scorched area will be gone. I used this quite a few times in heirloom sewing and it really does work!
Your solution was perfect, very cute and clever!!

You are patient, I would probably have tossed it before I thought of how to fix it. Good job and a really cute wall hanging.

Very clever way to save your hard work. It looks lovely.

kaelynangelfoot 12-12-2013 05:49 PM

It was a great little quilt before the scorching but the gifts and stockings add so much charm! I really love the final quilt.

Jackie Spencer 12-12-2013 05:53 PM

Very cute, great save!

SouthPStitches 12-13-2013 08:41 AM

Another crisis averted ; nice save! Quilting sure has a way of keeping us humble. No matter how long one has quilted, there's always something that can and often does happen to the projects. Constantly making that "lemonade"!

gramajo 12-13-2013 08:44 AM

 I like the solution better than the original. Your additions made it look great!

The box of adorable buttons were a gift so I am not sure where she got them. As a thank you to her I decided to make her a little mini quilt with some of the buttons and eventually I will make one for myself also.

Quilter 65 12-13-2013 10:56 AM

An artistic design, isn't that the way you meant it to be??

gabeway 12-13-2013 10:59 AM
