What do you do to occupy a 6 year old GD...???

I have my grand-daughter here for a couple of sleepovers and my little darling wants to do something - "grand-ma can I sew a quilt???" :) So off we go digging in my bag of bits and pieces of leftovers, she chooses the motives we cut out, the colours and other materials to match - in short we make a scrappy quilt, very scrappy... :)
She sews....I unstich all the seams where she couldn't stay on the 1/4" line...., fix here and there, finally we did finish the blocks, Maylin helps me to place them so it looks good and then I sew them together as by then of course she lost interest and plays in the play-room with something else and I put everything together and add a border as otherwise this bright quilt would still be too small, even for a newborn little boy. So this is the top. I hope to be able to sandwich it and quilt it and add the border before the 2nd of December as baby is being dedicated at our church. It's simple but I hope you like Maylin's taste :) so thanks for looking!!! |
What a darling baby quilt! How proud she will be when it is presented to new brother! You both did a super job!!

I made a quilt with my grandmother when I was about 4 or 5, (back in the 1940's) I would give ANYTHING today if I had that little quilt. However, i will always remember the joy of making it with my grandma! Your GD will always remember this experience. Hope she is able to keep it forever!
|

Well done grandma. You are helping to encourage a future quilter and you ended up with a pretty quilt.

So glad you had fun For the day! She may have lost interest at the time but it will be a day she will remember a long time from now!

|
What a wonderful memory and keepsake for you both.
|
What a cute baby quilt! I also have a 6 year old DGD who likes to sew. When she comes she asks what she can make this time. We have made a doll blanket, tooth pillow (she puts her tooth in for the tooth fairy) and last time the tube pillow case. Not sure what we will do the next time she asks because she sews for a while but then wants to do something else. But she sure is proud when she's done.

What a cute story! I love it that your Grandaughter is becoming a quilter! Nice job Maylin and Grandma! :)
|
That is a great story.
I hope you plant a seed for later times for her. I have so many fond memories being with my grandma doing these things. I helped her tie a quilt, she taught me to embroider, crochet, and tat. |
Great that she is interested, you both did a wonderful job.
|
I can't wait until my darling GD Zoe is old enough to sit on my lap and sew with me, probably a small doll quilt for semi-instant results. I did this before with another little girl who was 5 years old, I had her put her hand over mine when I rotary cut the fabric, then she sat in my lap to sew or the part she liked best was using the foot pedal while I sewed. The first time we tried this, I had just threaded my machine, put my foot on the pedal and she opened up the machine to see it sewing and said in a delighted voice "cool". A moment I won't forget, and she was so proud of the little quilt she made.

Sew sweet!!!
|
I think she did a great job for one so young.

That is so perfect a quilt full of special memories for both of you and to share for the baby as well!
