I think maybe the set up of the bow tie blocks is called hugs and kisses or X and O's.

Its a bow tie block. I made one in Christmas prints, the blocks were 3", so it looks like wreaths.
That's a beautiful quilt! I love the colors.

Hi, you need to trim the excess created by the small square to reduce bulk otherwise the ends of your bow tie are going to be 'heavy' and will show up under the fabric. I hope this helps. Best wishes. :)

I can definitely see both patterns - the Bow Tie and the Snow Ball pattern.
