No, its all pieced and ready to be quilted.

Gladys 01-02-2013 03:21 AM

Oh my goodness. I was so wrong. I thought it was a snowball pattern. Oh well, just goes to show how much I still have to learn! ;)

I thought the same thing!

lallyann 01-02-2013 05:02 AM

Your SIL did beautiful work! I love this one too (as well as the Grandma's Fan you posted)! I agree it's a bowtie. Making a bowtie is on my 2013 to-do list :)

debcavan 01-02-2013 05:09 AM

It does look like bowtie with four put together. I wonder if it has a secondary name.

Looks like Hearts and Gizzards.

Tartan 01-02-2013 05:45 AM

It is a traditionally pieced Bowtie top with lots of the dreaded Y seams. Very pretty top!

mighty 01-02-2013 07:25 AM

I agree bowtie. It is really beautiful!

nativetexan 01-02-2013 08:25 AM

yep, four bow ties sewn together into larger blks.

Lilrain 01-02-2013 09:00 AM

It is just an old fashioned bowtie that the maker chose to do a little different setting with. Great find!

luvstoquilt 01-02-2013 10:16 AM

That was the first quilt I ever made...a bow tie in black and white for my son. Fun to make and I love how your SIL made that one.

Here's the same block done without the Y seams.
You can make the measurements anything you wish.

Another scrappy! Such a sweet old quilt top with an interesting setting... First I thought it was a snowball, but you ladies are right about it being a bowtie set differently.. Adorable!

Peggy Jeanne 01-02-2013 12:31 PM

It is a bowtie quilt!

wolph33 01-02-2013 03:52 PM

cool top-looks vintage

ube quilting 01-02-2013 04:09 PM

You have the right answer, bow tie! And it is totally cool. Will you be showing it after quilting? Anxious to see it!
peace

fayza 01-02-2013 04:59 PM

I was going to say a 'snowball variation' but I can clearly see the bowties. It's set up different than the other bow tie patterns I've seen. I like it very much :)

Question Jan...why only cut out the middle on the corners?

mythreesuns 01-03-2013 04:55 AM

I do not know the name of this quilt pattern..... but I did send a e-mail to my cousin asking if she still had her quilt from grandma like this one, as we both had one exactly like this one from way back in the early 70's.. mine was damaged in a fire and could not be repaired.

nanacarolyn 01-03-2013 05:11 AM

what ever its pretty

I think the setting of these bowties is called mosaic.........I too only cut the middle piece fabric, reason being, as I was told a long time ago........the back piece is the "true" edge of that block and that is what you look for when joining. When sewing on that small square and then folding over, it sometimes is a bit smaller...the middle piece is just bulk to get rid of, but that back piece is true...

Grace MooreLinker 01-03-2013 09:08 AM

looks like the snowball pattern to me.

quiltymom 01-03-2013 11:12 AM

At first glance I thought it was a snow ball too, but at closer look I see it is a bow tie.

grammyj 01-04-2013 07:22 AM

I think maybe the set up of the bow tie blocks is called hugs and kisses or X and O's.

I thought the same thing. For the life of me, I don't see bow tie.

purplefiend 01-04-2013 11:08 PM

Its a bow tie block. I made one in Christmas prints, the blocks were 3", so it looks like wreaths.
That's a beautiful quilt! I love the colors.

Hi, you need to trim the excess created by the small square to reduce bulk otherwise the ends of your bow tie are going to be 'heavy' and will show up under the fabric. I hope this helps. Best wishes. :)

JJC 01-05-2013 02:32 PM

I can definitely see both patterns - the Bow Tie and the Snow Ball pattern.
