I should say they, I just had to run tools and parts and just generally be the gopher! oops

Chele 06-22-2008 02:08 PM

What beautiful pictures. I like the clouds in the background. I bet all of you are tired tonight!

mgshaw 06-22-2008 02:10 PM

Mainly hot! They are still out there but I told them I got things to do! So I came home!

barnbum 06-22-2008 02:23 PM

Wow! Can I help? Is it wheat/straw? Or oats/straw? How many acres do you have? What other crops do you raise? Do you have animals?

I must be 100% country girl because I'd love to spend the day there. :D

Moonpi 06-22-2008 02:29 PM

Beautiful pictures.

mgshaw 06-22-2008 02:32 PM

This is actually on the family farm as in Grandma still owns it but FIL runs it and DH and brothers do most of the work. I have no idea how many acres there are, several sections and half sections, and qtr sections, part of it is pasture, part of it is planted to wheat so I just dont know, I am just the DIL you know! But yes we have some cattle and goats and a donkey! And come on over there is still several days left to go barring any major break downs.

barnbum 06-22-2008 02:40 PM

I've helped my brother and father get hay in before--glad I wasn't in the mow. My hay guy should be calling next week. I'll get two loads from him. Oh how I love the smell of the barn when the hay is stacked upstairs.

Farming is a tough business, you have to get big or get out. Good for your family for staying in it. We need farmers. :D

Celeste 06-22-2008 03:31 PM

Beautiful pictures!

thequiltlady08 06-22-2008 04:02 PM

Mgshaw,

I am so jealous. I would love to live there. I hail from IN originally - straight out of farm country... but now live in a growing, big city... I do not like it here... one day we will move to a quieter place... sigh... blessings on all our farmers - especially those hit by the flooding.

You can't beat an Oklahoma sky, can you?

Marcia 06-22-2008 05:14 PM

Melissa, What a great day you had. I would love to be there and play gopher with you.

I spent Saturday outdoors, too, but was planting flowers and shrubs. It is HOT here too.

It is a good tired when at the end of the day you can stand back and see what you have accomplished.

mgshaw 06-22-2008 05:22 PM

Marcia
you should have been here, just now came in from eartagging the 3 new calves. Tagging them wasnt the hard part getting the little buggers in the squeeze shoot!!!

Karla you would have had fun on that little party too!

Johnette, where are you?

barnbum 06-22-2008 05:39 PM

Oh yes--I would have loved it! :D

jacquemoe 06-22-2008 05:45 PM

WOW.................that doesn't look like fun, lol I know so little about farming. What are you harvesting or that's one heck of a lawn mower. No, I'm not that dumb.

mgshaw 06-22-2008 06:50 PM

 You are so silly Jac!!!!!
they are cutting wheat.

DA Mayer 06-22-2008 07:50 PM

Our little crops are just peeking their heads out. Wow.

Knot Sew 06-23-2008 04:36 AM

That looks great , my ancestors were all farmers mostly vegetables, a few cows a flock of fowl and a few pigs. How times have changed, now they are regulating the size of my compost pile and no animals....sad indeed. :D

Deb G 06-23-2008 07:29 AM

I love seeing your harvest pictures. That won't be happening around here for awhile yet because it has been so wet and cold but I think summer may finally have arrived. We've had one week of beautiful weather and this week is looking good.
I grew up on a farm in SD. My Mom still owns it and it will go to us, 4 daughters, someday. Those days on the farm were the best part of my life. It feels so good to work hard and sometimes feeling exhausted at the end of the day but it is a good tired.
I've lived in the city for many years and have never liked it. It's wonderful to have the farm to go to when I feel the houses closing in on me, which is most days. I'd like to retire in the country or a small town, not sure if I can talk hubby into it.

I helped a few years back when visiting the inlaws. They had some friends whose family owned a farm. Anyway, the old man that owned it passed away and they needed to get the wheat in. So, EVERYONE went and helped. I was so glad to hit the shower that night. I had that stuff ALL OVER ME! But, it was alot of work, but it was fun too. At least that big huge "lawnmower" had a/c in it! lol

reneebobby 06-23-2008 08:38 AM

 I think columbine is a flower, but hey you were kinda close its combine

mgshaw 06-23-2008 09:54 AM

Loretta
no this is it. I know there is a big difference in the time period for planting and harvesting here than in the north. we will plant again in Sept. or Oct. What we plant mostly is called Hard red winter wheat. I think in the north the planting is done in the spring and harvesting in the fall.

blmclin 06-23-2008 04:44 PM

Melissa, I can certainly identify with you. I also live in central Oklahoma and was raised on a farm. Your pictures bring back wonderful memories. Thank you for posting them

johnette 06-23-2008 06:08 PM

I am in southeastern Oklahoma, close to the red river. About 50 miles East of I-35.

My DH has been working down around Madill for the last few months, so he is real familiar with your area!

What town are you in?

Sara Street 06-23-2008 07:54 PM

Hi Melissa! I've been enjoying sending private messages to you today, and I finally moved over to the forum and saw your pictures that you've also posted today! My husband says, "wow, does that bring back memories!" He grew up on a farm south of Elk City and always helped with the wheat harvest. He and his Dad even traveled north to help with commercial harvesting throughout the summer. That was back in the 50's - he left the farm and got his degree in electrical engineering at Oklahoma State University.

I've wondered about some type of quilt pattern to showcase the life of a wheat farmer... and they also raised cattle.

We'll pray for the weather to hold until you finish cutting all that wheat!

mgshaw 06-23-2008 10:40 PM

Sara, would love to see what you come up with for a quilt on wheat farmers! That is an awsome idea!

PamH 06-24-2008 02:58 AM

Great pictures Melissa, Emilys dad is a farmer but harvest here isn't till the fall. Right now we just pray for dry weather for the crops and to get the hay up.

blmclin 06-24-2008 04:44 AM

Melissa, We are in Tecumseh, about 35 miles SE of Ok City. We were raised in Macomb, south of Tecumseh.

johnette 06-24-2008 03:36 PM

I am in Durant. Go by the Tecumseh exit quite a bit. Do you go to the Hancock's in Shawnee? I just discovered it. Plan on going this weekend. Maybe have some pictures of my haul come Monday.

mgshaw 06-24-2008 04:15 PM

There are at least 3 or 4 of you gals down there in south east OK! You guys should hook up and take pics for us. Even a few in North east Texas that would be real close to you. Sounds like the makings for a fun day to me!

beachlady 06-24-2008 04:51 PM

Wonderful pictures and stories. Farmers are the best!! My husband's family farmed in South Dakota. Being a city girl, I loved going to the farms and seeing baby calfs etc. It was a hard life. One thing I hated was the flies!!!

gcathie 06-24-2008 05:17 PM

Thank Goodness for the farmers!!! A lot of hard work!!! Thank you and your family!!

johnette 06-24-2008 05:49 PM

Melissa,
That sounds like a great idea to me. I know there's a Joanns superstore in Frisco, TX and a 2 story one in Dallas. I think that would make a good girls day out. What do you think?

johnette 06-24-2008 07:13 PM

OK, I stand corrected, west Texas has beautiful skies, too.

blmclin 06-24-2008 07:33 PM

I have good friends in Durant that I went to school with. I only live a mile off the Tecumseh exit. Yes I go to Hancocks quite often. Seems I always have something going, nothing like you gals post. How I envy the beautiful work all of you do.

johnette 06-25-2008 05:13 PM

blmclin,
I'll honk when I go by your exit on Friday. Maybe we'll run into each other at Hancock's one of these days. Do you ever come to Durant?
