what would you charge a client for this...

I drew up the pattern, quilted it etc which involved a lot of sewing. See the picture. It is a memory heart tree wallhanging involving using the client s grandfather s fabrics that he used in his tailoring business. Most of the fabrics were almost impossible to work with but I struggled thru it. What more it had to be done within three weeks so I forsaked everything. It is 36 by 42. I had to buy the other fabrics as well as battings which came out to $36.10 not including the stuffs to make a pattern. Now what would you have charged the client for this. Thank you for your advices. sorry dont know how to make the picture smaller

pokergal3 11-25-2012 12:46 PM

I even quilted the background and included a custom made label on the back for the quilt and also dont know if you can it but even had loops for hanging on a rod per client s request.

DebraK 11-25-2012 12:49 PM

it's beautiful. $200 minimum, and they would be getting a steal.

Beck55 11-25-2012 12:56 PM

did you talk about the price at all before you made it, what was your conversation with your client? By the way it is quite lovely.

Sunnie 11-25-2012 12:59 PM

Your quilt & pattern are stunning. I agree with DebraK on the price.

pokergal3 11-25-2012 01:07 PM

Thank you for your replies. Yes we did talked about the prices and I had told her it would be $125 plus cost of fabrics etc. She said fine no problem!!! I may even pay you more than that. I had let her know it was ready for pick up and gave her the costs plus 20 percent discount which came to $126 She said no way only $60. I gave her some links to check out what others are charging for the same size wallhanging but very simple pattern on it. She has not gotten back to me yet.

pokergal3 11-25-2012 01:09 PM

Yes we had a talk about the pricing and she said over and over it was good perfect etc!!! and now she only wants to pay $60 for the whole thing. What a joke!

momto5 11-25-2012 01:09 PM

$200 plus the cost of your expenses..the fabric, batting, whatever, that added up to another $36.10...and you need to allow a bit for what you said you didn't charge for the pattern-making. Harsh? No, reality.

PS....Next time, get a GOOD deposit before you do anything...:)

Sounds like you had a verbal agreement for the price of the item and she is backing out of that agreement. Keep the wallhanging until you get the price that was originally agreed upon.

PaperPrincess 11-25-2012 01:11 PM

First of all, it is just beautiful!
Just read your second post. DO NOT let her pay less than the $126. She's robbing you at that. If she won't pay that, then keep it for yourself.

Stacey 11-25-2012 01:22 PM

This is a terrific piece. And do not accept any less than the agreed on price. She is absolutely getting a bargain at that.

fivepaws 11-25-2012 01:23 PM

It is priceless and will be treasured forever. Does she not like it or what? What is her problem. $200 is very reasonable.

Diane007 11-25-2012 01:26 PM

wow.... I agree it is worth more then $60.00
I guess that is why they say we need a written contract....

200 sounds good to me.
let us know how you make out

ShabbyTabby 11-25-2012 01:37 PM

I totally agree, she is trying to get that lovely wall hanging for a song. People who do not quilt have no idea of the costs, time, and work that goes into something so beautiful. If she won't pay the $126 then tell her you are sorry but you can't let it go for less than that and keep it for yourself. Let her try to find something half that nice for less than $150!!!

feline fanatic 11-25-2012 01:43 PM

I can't believe your client only wants to pay you $60 for a custom made quilt that is quite beautiful. At the pre-discussed $126 she is getting a bargain. I agree with the others in that it is worth at least $200. Do not let this person take if for less than $126. If she balks, then sell it on Etsy or e-bay for $200 because it is definitely worth that. It is lovely.

QUILTNMO 11-25-2012 01:47 PM

too bad all this had happened but next time i would make sure i had it in writing its very pretty people dont realize how much is involved in making quilts

antylu 11-25-2012 03:02 PM

I am so sorry you are having this experience; it takes a lot of work and time to make a quilt and if she agreed to a price beforehand then she should stick to that. I beleive the $126 is more than reasonable and she should actually be offering you more, I agree that if she is not willing to pay then just keep it or put it up for sale or what you feel you would like to do with it. Very detailed and lots of time spent with materials plus your design, you did a wonderful job!

akisan 11-25-2012 03:12 PM

I would charge $300.00 or more. You did a lot of extra work on that quilt. Other quilters will charge extra for the other things you did. You need to charge for "stress fee" also for sewing the grandfathers fabrics in the quilt. Truly some people don't realize the time, effort and energy that goes into a quilt.

sewelegant 11-25-2012 03:17 PM

I agree with all the others. She couldn't get a posterboard personalized framed collage for $60! She's shopped at Walmart too long. Keep it & sell it on ebay. I wouldn't take a penny less than $200 for it. And you only had 3 weeks to design & make it? She's delusional.

ruthrings 11-25-2012 03:23 PM

Do you have a log of how many hours you put in? Minimum, $10 per hour? I'm sure it's more than 20 hours.

QuiltnNan 11-25-2012 03:26 PM

your quilt is awesome! she wants an original design for a pittance??? i'd sell it elsewhere

AGREE!!! Do not cave in....it is one of a kind and gorgeous! She would be out the fabric she supplied..too bad! It is that nice!

I agree with $200 minimum. And if she still balks....tell her that you listed it on Ebay. The bidding has started!

Itemize your invoice.

What is the deal about "discount"???

Sandy

Suzanne Damien 11-25-2012 03:35 PM

Once burned, you wont let that happen again. People don't realize the time put inyo this.

coachmatthewsvhs 11-25-2012 03:36 PM

your wall hanging is fantastic! The sentiment involved would make it hard for me to withhold .......... next time I'd go for a written contract as suggested. I hope you get your agreed upon price.... if not, maybe this is your "pay-it-forward". My family says I should take orders.... I tell them to look up the meaning of "hobby".... if I were contracted, it wouldn't be fun any more.

Boy I hate it when people try to rip others off! They have a sign in restaurants that say's good food takes time, We should have a sign saying, Good quilting takes lots of time and money. I can throw something together for little of nothing, but I can make you a heirloom that will last life times for more. Your wall hanging is very creative and beautiful. You did a great job. Since she approached you to make the item and had specific wants for it and it was under a time constraint. I would say the 200.00 would be a great deal. but she doesn't even wanna pay you for the materials let alone your time. HUMMBUG TO HER I SAY, YES HUMMBUG. don't you dare give it to her for the 60.00. I'd keep it and know I'd protected my sewing from someone who obliviously hasn't got a clue :=)(hopping down from my soap box now) Let us know how it turns out.

ube quilting 11-25-2012 04:45 PM

I agree $200.00 would be a very fair price for this work pf art. Remember that is what it is. Drafting the pattern, collecting the components , piecing, quilt prep and quilting, binding and label. No less than 200.00.

And it is wonderful.
peace

debcavan 11-25-2012 04:47 PM

It is beautiful.

Lori L 11-25-2012 04:47 PM

Seems unanimous......don't you dare let her have that quilt for $60!!! I would box it up and keep it in my closet before I let her have it.....and that would be a shame, it's gorgeous. Keep us posted....I'm sure you haven't heard the last from this woman.

bearisgray 11-25-2012 04:53 PM

What's up with the discount?

What an "entity" you are dealing with! May the world give your 'client' everything he/she deserves!

Debbie B 11-25-2012 04:55 PM

It sounds like she agreed to $125, so I don't know why she's backing out at a cost of $126. She is getting a bargain at this price for all the work you've done. Maybe you can sell it to someone else. It's beautiful.

red-warrior 11-25-2012 05:10 PM

So sorry for your bad experience.....the quilt is beautiful and I too feel the $125 + materials was more than fair!

Crqltr 11-25-2012 05:11 PM

The quilt is beautiful...I sure hope you did not let her have it without full payment.

Tweety2911 11-25-2012 05:11 PM

I hear of this happening so many times. So sorry she reneged on the agreed upon price estimate. I think you did an amazing job on the wall hanging and would hold onto until she comes up with the money.

nunnyJo 11-25-2012 05:23 PM

this is beautiful. 3 times price of materials is the usual charge but in this case more would be right

Pat Grant 11-25-2012 05:24 PM

Keep that wallhanging until she pays the agreed upon price!

Annaquilts 11-25-2012 05:27 PM

$175 including the fabric.

grannyQ 11-25-2012 05:28 PM

I agree with all the ladies, do not let her have the quilt for anything less than $200 or even more. The time frame of 3 weeks was too much to ask for let alone her not living up to what you agreed upon. No one knows how much time we put into all of our projects. Let her go to Wal Mart.

hopetoquilt 11-25-2012 05:47 PM

Stick with the price she agreed to. Tell her you will hold onto it until she can come up with the money. Itemize the bill. Time on each portion (design, fabric shopping, piecing, appliqué, quilting, binding, cost of materials.).

PolkaBabe 11-25-2012 05:56 PM

Beautiful quilt, that took alot of hours, $200 is not much. Thank you for sharing.

sylvia77 11-25-2012 06:07 PM

That woman should be ashamed of herself! It's worth more than what you quoted her.
