Show me what's on your design wall right now...

I just finished a queen-size quilt and waiting for my ordered batting to arrive before I can put my next quilt in the frame.

Time to do some scrappy sewing and use up some of the scraps...

So I've been making 6.5" scrappy log cabin blocks...

Latrinka 10-29-2010 04:00 PM

Awe, so cute, I love that, can't wait to see finished quilt! I don't have a design wall, I just put on those clip hangers and hang on a door frame!

Not that I'm actually working on anything, this stuff is just there for lack of a better place for it.

Ditter43 10-29-2010 04:46 PM

Right now nothing but strings and a few pins. :D

I have a year's worth of sampler blocks demanding to be assembled. I am tired of resorting to sashing and cornerstones. :-(

Anyone have any ideas? Sorry, the colors are a little off.

Jingle 10-29-2010 05:08 PM

I don't use a design wall, not enough wall space. I usually lay out as much as will fit on my table, not very big. I usually follow a pattern and when I'm done, I am amazed.

RedGarnet222 10-29-2010 05:12 PM

Mine is folded up in a drawer! I bought a really nice curtain rod to hang it on and that is as far as it has gotten done since I moved to the new room! LOL!

On the upside I have been quilting my little heart out today on a runner.

needles3thread 10-29-2010 05:14 PM

How about putting a "border" all the way around a group of four or more blocks in the center-then use another row of blocks around the outside of that border.
This is a little different arrangement. I did one
and I like the way it turned out.

needles3thread 10-29-2010 05:18 PM

I just looked at your blocks again-If they are fairly large size
blocks and you only have 12, perhaps use fewer for the
center group before adding the border.

That's a good idea. Thank you so much!
Edited to add: I think I will need more blocks?

quiltingfan 10-29-2010 05:19 PM

I do not have a design wall but I am not piecing anything right now. I am quilting 2 baby quilts at the moment but that is it. Have a couple of ideas though..;

Must have posted at the same time! They are 12" blocks.
The fabric was provided by the shop so I don't have too much
that will coordinate. I will play with them (and your idea) over
the weekend. Thanks again :)

Here's what's been on mine for a few weeks now: I used the layout from a Christmas BOM, but then changed the blocks. I am using all designs from Art to Heart, there will be 12 total. I still have to blanket stitch around these as well.

hm, bad lighting on this photo, sorry

The only design wall I have is in my mind. Unfortunately that is waayyyy too cluttered to share :)

rhona hodgson 10-29-2010 09:10 PM

Hi, just wondering what you used on the wall to hold up your quilt!!! :?: :?

I use decorative quilting pins that I got on a shop hop and straight pins. LOL
I did it myself and used what I had on hand!

Just a few thoughts is what my wall is full of! Just like my mind, can't seem to keep it on one thing at a time!
The stuff on the right side is my very first attempt at tube quilting-it was so much fun and I think I like this layout! I messed up two blocks, so I cam up with a wallhanging, a table runner and a table topper! I still have to sew them together and figure out a border, but I might stick with this layout!

natalieg 10-29-2010 09:22 PM

an oops moment!

rhona hodgson 10-29-2010 10:25 PM

Just wondering what the quilt is sticking too!! What material is it sticking too or do you just pin it on the wall!!! :?

natalieg 10-30-2010 02:02 PM

Whose wall?
Mine is just flannel, so the quilt pieces just stick to it.

I took some cheapo flannel and taped it to the wall. The fabric sticks right to the fabric when it is just blocks. As you start sewing the blocks together and making the pieces bigger it can get heavy, so I just use some strategically placed straight pins to hold them on the wall at that time. Most pieces that are smaller than say 18" x 18" will stick on their own without the pins.

The blocks you see on my wall right now are just holding onto the flannel by themselves.

Some people use batting instead of flannel...I think things would adhere better to the batting...but since I used flannel, that's what is still up on my design wall.

Here's my suggestion: Green and beige sashing strips (maybe green diamonds) with purple (pieced square in a square) corner squares. Here's where a design wall really pays off to preview your designs!

My design wall is pending. We purchased 4 large sheets of styrofoam to cover the former garage door. (Work in progress)

I don't have a wall board. Sooooo this is what my two bedrooms look like that I cut and sew in. I have several things going as you can tell.

Lady Tapioca 10-30-2010 06:43 PM

Thank you for your suggestion Quilttiludrop! Those are colors I would like to use!
I will probably not get a chance to play with it until later in the week.

natalieg 10-30-2010 07:15 PM

The one my DH and I made in the picture cost just under $20!

Mine is just a piece of white fleece, hung up with two clip-type pants hangers on the rim of the closet door. The fabric blocks just stick to the fleece

rhona hodgson 10-31-2010 02:47 AM

Thanks for that. I thought it must be some special board or something, Duh!! :P

donna873 10-31-2010 02:49 AM

wow..lots of pretty stuff, I wish I had a place for a design wall.

rhona hodgson 10-31-2010 02:50 AM

Thanks guys ( natalieg and aorlflood ). I'm gonna get me one of them lol. I thought it was some special board that was going to cost me a fortune. I'm all excited now to try it. Thanks again

I used a cheapo plastic tablecloth with a flannel/felt like backing and put grommets in it then hung it up on the wall with cup holders.

Thanks for that, will give it a try.

I do not have a design wall, but use my dinning room table. Trying for the first time to make a pinwheel. Having fun using my favorite material. The squares are 6 1/2" which is not really big and i still have material left over. Why i say that, is cause i DID NOT WANT to cut my fat quarters encase i needed them for something which needs the whole square. Decided to just use them and enjoy. I am VERY PLEASED I DID.
