Great job! You'd have to look really hard to find the patch. You blended it in beautifully!

veryvirginia 03-06-2012 05:20 AM

That is the reason I always try to add a piece of each color to the back of my quilts to be given. Our oldest GS had several holes made by his best friend (dog) and I simply took the back pieces and appliqued on the front to repair the damage and then appliqued over the back with other fabric in designs (sun, moon, dog, cat). He loved the quilt changes and the colors matched perfectly even though they had faded with washing.

LindaR 03-06-2012 05:37 AM

wow great job

Rebecca VLQ 03-06-2012 05:42 AM

Woo! Great job fixing it! We have a quilt (store bought) that got nibbled on by our dog when she was a pup. She's since passed on, and that's one hole I'll never fix.

jaciqltznok 03-06-2012 05:44 AM

you did perfectly! The same thing just happened to my daughter on the first quilt she made for herself, without ME helping her. She was so heartbroken. But I talked her through the patching just like you did as hers was almost identical. Just the top border! It looks LOVED now! And her hubby has learned a valuable lesson in why puppies are NOT allowed to be left unattended in mommy's bed!

piepatch 03-06-2012 05:50 AM

You did a great repair job! Who would ever know it had been damaged?

Jingle 03-06-2012 06:14 AM

You did a wonderful job on the patch. I keep my pets off my quilts. Some I have given away have cats with claws and big dogs allowed to lay on them. If something like this happened they would probably just throw the quilt away. Makes me shudder when people tell me how their pets like laying on a quilt I have given to the person. Most people really don't appreciate a homemade quilt.

terisail 03-06-2012 06:34 AM

Great fix, will keep this in mind!!

Caswews 03-06-2012 06:48 AM

Glenda m 03-06-2012 07:08 AM

Great job. Glad you had the fabric to match.

valleyquiltermo 03-06-2012 07:27 AM

That is a fantastic repair job to be sure. You'd really have to look to find it.

dirty1mom 03-06-2012 07:28 AM

Great job on the fix! My son's one dog has her own "quilt" - store bought. As the seams wear out and let go I have a chance to practice my applique. Son keeps saying "it's for a dog, don't be so fussy." I keep telling him I want the practice. He doesn't get it but the dog sits and waits patiently for me to finish.

QuiltingJaguar 03-06-2012 07:31 AM

Wow you did a great job can not even see anymore problems, don't you just love our pets and the neat things they do for us LOL

Gabrielle's Mimi 03-06-2012 07:37 AM

You did a terrific job...you almost can't see the repair. I had a large piece of backing fabric on a table ready to be used as the back of a log cabin quilt. My young dog was very curious and chewed just a small bite out of a corner. When I opened the fabric the one little bite became multiple small holes in the middle of the fabric! I loved the fabric, so I just used it anyway and appliquéd a little design over each hole. It makes me smile to remember why I have those holes and how cute my dog was when he was young. He's gone now, and I am glad I used that fabric.

carolynjo 03-06-2012 07:47 AM

Good save on that one!

feffertim 03-06-2012 08:16 AM

solstice3 03-06-2012 09:19 AM

can't tell there was ever a hole. great job

gmabcaa1 03-06-2012 09:22 AM

Nice patch work! Most people looking at the quilt will never notice a thing.

Corky 03-06-2012 09:50 AM

I've wondered how I would fix something like that. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing the pics

fmhall2 03-06-2012 09:51 AM

Very nice job. We have an old quilt that our dog chewed a hole about 6 inches big all the way through it right in the middle of the quilt. I never did fix that one.

callen 03-06-2012 10:17 AM

Great job. Hardly notice it.

karate lady 03-06-2012 10:18 AM

my oldest son was a smoker and also did not know how much work went into a quilt. I had made him a simple quilt made from the bell bottoms he and siblings wore in the 70's. Needless to say he burned holes in it. I took it and said I would fix it when he quit smoking. He did, I did and he proudly keeps it on his bed now. Could only put random patches over the holes, but we call it his Hobo quilt....

rosebud23323 03-06-2012 10:24 AM

great job!

bunbytes 03-06-2012 10:28 AM

Thank goodness the kids usually don't chew a hole in the quilts! I made my first quillow for my niece and gave it to her for Christmas when we were visiting. The first thing she did was stick her feet in the pillow pocket and ripped the stitching. No sewing machine so I had to repair it by hand. After that I always doubled stitched the pillow pocket.

Your repair isn't even noticeable. Lucky dog!

bunbytes 03-06-2012 10:30 AM

What a great "grandma" you are.

Painiacs 03-06-2012 10:38 AM

You did such a great job you can't tell it was patched!!

heberstitcher 03-06-2012 10:43 AM

WOW! Great repair job. You would never know there had been a hole there.

annthreecats 03-06-2012 10:44 AM

What a great save. I would never know that it was a patch. Thanks for sharing your process with us.

Sometimes it's hard to figure out how to repair something when all you can see is the hole. I recently repaired a knitted blanket for a friend and I'm not that great a knitter, but I took it step by step and the fix turned out pretty good.

I know - people just don't appreciate them.
Her grandmother and I were both upset about the hole.
I don't think people realize the time and energy that goes into a quilt.

sewmorethings 03-06-2012 11:17 AM

wow, had to look really hard to see where you did the repair, great job

wyoming_quilter 03-06-2012 11:27 AM

Looks like you did well.

CajunQuilter2 03-06-2012 11:42 AM

wow, great fix, can barely tell

jarenie 03-06-2012 01:05 PM

Great Job on the repair.

NOTE: Whenever I gift a quilt I use all the lefover fabric to make a pillowcase with drawstring. I send instruction on how to stuff the quilt into the bag and that the bag has to be washed each time the quilt is washed and in the same load. This will keep al the fabric on the same page as the quilt and if repair is needed the fabric will be the same. This feature of my quilting has saved many a quilt from a bad life.
