When a Dog Chewed a Hole in a Quilt...
2 Attachment(s)
Last year, I made a quilt for someone to give to their grand-daughter for her wedding.
A few weeks ago, I received an email.... their dog chewed a hole in it, can you fix it? "Well, I have to see the hole. Then I may or may not have any more of some of the fabrics... It may need to be an 'honest patch'." Fortunately, the hole was in the outer border of the quilt, and I still have that fabric (I loved it, and bought extra). Also, the hole is only in the quilt top and not overly big. There was a hole in the batting big enough for my finger to fit through. So... I stitched the hole in the batting shut. Stabilized some of the ragged edges of the hole. Then I cut a "patch" of matching fabric and appliqued it over the hole. |
You did a great job... my girlfriend had a cat who did the same thing! (the cat has since died of old age no she did not kill it )
Happy Quilting! Quiltinmama |

My dog Just ate the corner off the first quilt I made. I wasn't a happy camper..
Glad you could fix it for them. |

Looks perfect, not even any fading to contend with, I'm sure it's owner will be thrilled.

Beautiful job and thank you for sharing
Have a Blessed day Ellen |
Very nice repair. When I began quilting with a longarm, many many "dog quilts" were the end result of practicing techniques. When they have their own, they leave mine alone :)

And I thought I was the only one! I made a beautiful Mystery Quilt a few years ago and my sister fell in love with it and begged me for it. I happily gave it to her. Last fall she called to let me know her dog had chewed a couple of holes in it. We only live a few blocks away from each other, so one day when I was over I snuck a peak. I was devastated. I am in the process of fixing it now. This quilt, the holes went all the way through but also was lucky that it was only in the outside border with just a touch on the inside border. I did indeed have all the fabric I needed to fix it. I cut around it, pieced the top and managed to sew that in pretty well. The back I did just like you did and "patched" it along with a layer of batting. I just have to quilt it now and reattach the binding. I'm not a dog person anyways so you can imagine how I feel about them now, LOL. Thanks for listening!

fantastic patch job!!!! the bad spot would be hard to find unless you knew it was there.

Great repair job.
I would have considered taking a picture of the damaged area and a picture of the dog, combining the pictures and printing it on some fabric sheets and patching the hole with it. Would be a great reminder of times past, and a conversation piece. |
You did a great repair job!!!
|
Thank you, Everyone!
I hope they are pleased with this simple repair. |

I always try to keep large enough scraps of quilts I have made just to have handy if anything needs fixing later on. It is so good you had the fabric and did such a wonderful job of patching it.

Some of the fabrics I have, some were used in other projects.... I was so grateful when I saw the hole. It was small and I had the fabric. |

I had the chance to visit my family's ca. 1780 quilt at Colonial Williamsburg in the Textile Research Museum when I attended Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival a couple weeks ago. In carefully photographing the quilt again, I was reacquainted with a repair done exactly this way well over 100 years ago, maybe even much earlier! You did good, girl!Jan in VA

Excellent fix!

Wow, that's quite the meanding job there!!!! Bet no one will notice it! Way to go!!!!

I made a quilt for my grand-daughter and her dog chewed several holes in it. I covered them with large appliqued flowers and everyone thought that was the way I designed the quilt. Don't know how to post a picture otherwise I'd show you how it turned out. You sure did a great job with your mending too!
|
What a wonderful patching job you did! They should be thrilled with it!

so......I'm not the only one who had to do this, huh? Same thing here - made a quilt for my girlfriend's daughter and after several years she let her mother in on her little secret - the dog ate the quilt! No problem, I told her, let me see it, and thankfully I had some of the same fabric - took off the chewed part of the border, added a section back in and it looks like I just had to piece the border! Problem solved. Now, as to the dog......well, He's not allowed back on the bed!

You did a great job!
