Whirling Octagons

4 Attachment(s)
I stumbled across this block when fishing around online for inspiration.
It was not fun, I can tell you, drawing it into EQ; but I managed to create a usable pattern.

I did straight-line at the ditch in the octagons and background.
I used my embroidery machine to quilt the centers and the border.

The quilt will be added to many the quild i belong to are going to donate to The Lydia Project:

Wow. That's a beauty.

very nicely done. i'm not sure how i would approach drawing that in EQ. i think i see that the longer orange strip is a meeting of the strip in the triangle y-seamed to the octagon; right? and i like the border treatment, too.

Everything about this quilt is delightful. Colors, fabric patterns, block, and quilting are all superb.

That is a beautiful quilt. The pattern is very intriguing! Color choices are great. I checked out the website as I had not heard of that project. Looks like another wonderful way to help other women face difficulty in life as they face cancer and all of the ramifications that come with it. Thank you for sharing your quilt and the information.

PaperPrincess 09-04-2018 03:52 AM

What a wonderful quilt! The name is sure descriptive of the design.

Sallybear6 09-04-2018 05:29 AM

This is a beauty and I love the combination of colors, embroidery and quilting!

Tartan 09-04-2018 05:33 AM

Beautiful results even if it was a bear to piece!

SusieQOH 09-04-2018 06:47 AM

Very unusual pattern! I love it and your choice of fabrics is wonderful.

sash 09-04-2018 08:00 AM

It turned out just beautiful. Love those fabrics and embroidery.

thanks, everybody, for the compliments. :)

it just looks difficult.
it was actually very easy to piece.
drawing it into EQ was the challenge.

there is no orange anywhere in the quilt, so i'm guessing you mean the center strips of each triangle?

there are no y-seams at all.
the seam attaching the first triangular strip-set is a partial seam.
once all 8 triangle sets have been attached, the first seam can be completed.

Mumto2 09-04-2018 01:20 PM

Beautiful results!

nativetexan 09-04-2018 02:03 PM

partial seams. yes. this looks great!!!

Wow! Beautiful quilt. Great job. I don't think I have ever seen that pattern.

EmiliasNana 09-05-2018 05:01 AM

Both this and your DD9P are wonderful. Thanks for the construction tips and information re: the Lydia Project. It is nice to see you contribute some of your own fine work !

carolynjo 09-05-2018 05:28 AM

That is lovely, but no way would I try to do that.

I really like this one!

Jingle 09-05-2018 03:31 PM

Absolutely beautiful, everything about it.

feline fanatic 09-05-2018 03:39 PM

Wow, can't imagine drafting that one out in EQ. I will freely admit I am a total novice with the s/w. I just haven't spent enough time playing with it but even if I had, don't think I would have attempted trying to draw it in EQ. I really like the machine embroidered centers. I also think this block would make a very attractive quilt with each hexi treated as a separate block with sashing and not having the interwoven look.

Rose_P 09-05-2018 07:31 PM

Great quilt! Interesting design and beautifully done.

donna873 09-06-2018 01:56 AM

Beautiful quilt, designs etc, you knocked it out of the ball park with this one!

rryder 09-06-2018 03:39 AM

That’s a neat quilt! Using the same fabric for the thin blue inner border and the binding was a great idea (I hope you don’t mind if I steal that idea sometime) and I really like the way you quilted it. The more I look at it the more things I see that I like. I think I’d have a hard time parting with it.

Neat one, Patrice! Really interesting layout. I like the pattern, and also like the way you quilted it. Great choices

you are very kind. :)
the good thing about parting with it is that it's for a good cause.
and i can always make another.
and will. :)

retiredteacher09 09-06-2018 03:40 PM

I love the design. It is such a pretty quilt!

Rhonda Lee 09-06-2018 03:44 PM

Nicely done and very unique. Love it. I keep going back and looking at it.

This is not just like your design, but I found it helpful in how to draw such a design in EQ http://www.patchpieces.com/whirlingoctagon.html

And your picture is already on Google search https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl...act=mrc&uact=8

Patrice this absolutely striking!! I do not have EQ but I had to try figuring it out--with graph paper, info from Mr. Google on how to draw a perfect octagon, and a bunch of scraps. I am very pleased with my attempt and learned a whole pile in the process. I need to make a block for the Tinners group in our guild. I hope you don't mind if I use your block and give you credit for the inspiration. It is so unique.

patricej 09-07-2018 09:34 AM

drawing the basic shapes was not the problem. (notice her video does not show how she drew the stripes.)
drawing the stripes that went on an angles was the hard part.
the geometric maths for that was waaaaaaaay over my head. lol
and EQ will only let you divide the workspace into so many "snaps."

you are very welcome to use the block.
but you can only give me credit for being inspired by one i saw that somebody else had already created. i like the way i used the blocks much better than the way she used hers but that's about as hard as i can pat myself on the back.

GingerK 09-07-2018 12:43 PM

Thank you and I shall include that info on the fact sheet. I have had great fun participating in our 'Tinners' program and try to make a unique block for each tin I am given. This on is going to wow someone's socks off!

yes, I know. but I didn't have a clue where to start and this was helpful to me, and perhaps to others
