I made this wall-hanging for my neighbor. She likes to decorate for holidays, and she likes blue. When I found this pattern, I was inspired to make it for her. It uses Angelina fibers in the tree, and hot fix crystals on the larger snowflakes. Those were both new techniques to me.

Beautiful. Was it hard to do?

No, it was not hard to do. The instructions went on at length about getting the grid of blocks straight, and it just wasn't that hard. They even had me buy a special gridded flannel, which was a total waste of money. I couldn't get the grid straight because it just clinged to the batting underneath. I ended up drawing my own lines and then just eye-balling it. It is a quilt-as-you-go project. Getting the applique tree enlarged was the most difficult part. The machines generally don't enlarge by 450% (as was required), so I increased it 225% and then again by 200%. It has a lot of steps, but they are not difficult.

The pattern is called Winter Magic and can be found in the December 2010 edition of Quilter's World magazine. It was designed by Ann Lauer for Grizzly Gulch Gallery.

Love the design. Very wintery, but a new take on snow.

Angelina fibers are thin angel-hair-like fibers that you spread out and iron with a cool iron. They fuse to themselves creating a crystalline sheet of "fabric" that you can sew like anything else. They come in different colors and sheens. I got mine from "Embellishment Village" online.

The hot fix crystals are little rhinestones with glue on their flat side. You hit them with an iron to activate the glue, and they stick to whatever you're ironing them to. I forget where I got them, but you can find them online by simply doing a search for "hot fix crystals."

Thank you all for your kind comments.

When you need to enlarge, use posterazor.
You just scan the picture in, tell it what size you want it to be and the amount of overlap and it will do it for you. It's awesome.
