This is my first attempt at machine applique. I'm pretty happy with it. All the directions I read said to use thread to match each piece but I thought that would give me a line of color around each piece so I did white to match the background. I wasn't trying for invisible just a light touch. I think the stitches actually go with the old fashioned style of quilt this is. The third pic is the pattern I'm using to learn this method. The pieces are put on separated so the background shows through like tile grout. I see so many design possibilities with this once I learn it. Has anyone here done one of these? All those applique points really scare me though.

That's going to be really pretty. I like it!

DebraK 04-02-2011 03:28 PM

pretty cool. I think you were right about the white thread.

Painiacs 04-02-2011 03:32 PM

That's really neat!

What a neat pattern and I, too love blue and white! Meant to say you've done a great job!

Sweeterthanwine 04-02-2011 03:50 PM

I love this. You are an inspiration to do more applique work. Your quilt is going to be a knockout!

LAB55 04-02-2011 03:52 PM

It will be beautiful !! :-)
Please keep posting pictures as it progresses ! :-)

Treasureit 04-02-2011 03:56 PM

What stitch did you use? It is hard to see in the pictures. It looks hand stitched to me. And, did you turn under a seam allowance? It looks very neat!

GagaSmith 04-02-2011 03:57 PM

Beautiful fabrics and great time for your first time machine appliqueing. I'm going to try it soon.

lighthouse 04-02-2011 04:01 PM

This is a beautiful quilt. I do agree with the white thread. :-) :-D

Janetd 04-02-2011 04:02 PM

Yes I used freezer paper & starch to turn under the seams. The length on my machine is a 1.4 and the width is 1.0. The stitch is just called an applique stitch.

debcavan 04-02-2011 04:21 PM

You points are wonderful.

xsquilter 04-02-2011 05:09 PM

You're doing a super job on the applique. I really like that pattern, although I don't quite understand how it is all put together. Be sure to post more pictures as you progress with it.

How neat. Did you turn the raw edges in first? I am up for a challenge. Always willing to try something different.

jpthequilter 04-03-2011 09:13 AM

You did an absolutely fantastic job with the stitching on the blue ones!

Can you please, explain the quilt with all the lovely colors and stars n' stuff in it? Did you make it? or is it a picture for inspiration? I would like to know more about it.
I am captivated by some of the ideas in it as well as the choice of colors!
Thanks so much! Jeannie

stitchy65 04-03-2011 09:41 AM

I have yet to try any kind of applique. Thank you for sharing your progress. I think there is hope for me yet!

JCL in FL 04-03-2011 10:02 AM

I don't think I've ever seen one like that. Is it a pattern? What is the name. It's stunning, and quite unique.
