I am a new quilter and was attempting this quilt for my husband and I. It is from Fon's and Porter July/August 2010 magazine.
I messed up on the borders, but I need some ideas on how to quilt it. Whole quilt - being sandwiched Messed Up Border Close up |
Beautiful quilt!!!
The quilting part is my weak point. I'm not sure how I would quilt it if it were my own. |
very pretty
I love this quilt and the pattern. I get Fons and Porter magazine and I do not remember seeing it. Sometimes when a quilt is made out of materials/colors that are "out of the box" for me, I don't notice it like I do when a quilt is made in materials/colors that I like. I typically am not a fan of scrappy quilts but I really like this one. Now I will have to dig through my stacks of magazine to find that one so I can make one.

Just say that you wanted it like that- who will know- it is beautiful. Sorry I have not done that much FMQ.
Stippling would not take away from the beautiful pattern.
Or you let the pattern be your guide if you are quilting by hand. Quilt 1/4 inch in around the pattern. Very pretty! |
Very pretty! Something circular maybe? :D:D:D
In the close up - you can just see the celtic knot I was thinking about in the darker Blue triangles.
Is stippling done on the machine or by hand? Stupid question I know - but it just proves how much a rookie I am. |
I love it! I'm gonna try this 1 someday.
Love your quilt and I REALLY like the celtic knots on the dark blue.
That's a pretty big undertaking for your first quilt. It's lovely & you've done a great job. "Stippling" is done by hand or machine. Is the corner of the border your concern? You could place a square "cornerstone" in the corners or possibly 'top stitch' a small strip of the white fabric to complete the crossover in the corner. Or, love it & move on to #2 quilt. :-)
Very ambitious for a new quilter, you did a wonderful job and I am not seeing your mistake.
I don't see any problems with it either. It's beautiful!!! :D:D
I do CC (continous curve) around the colored triangles to add to the movement of the design. Maybe echo inside the dark blue triangles. Not sure on the borders at the moment.
Love it, great for your first quilt
The borders aren't messed up! That's a design choice, girl.
Beautiful love it , and the colors
What a lovely quilt! You have done really well for a first timer. The border may not be to your liking but I think that it is fine.
As for stipling, it is usually done on the machine though I can't see why you can't hand sew it? Maybe someone else on Quilting board can advise. I agree that that would be a nice quilting pattern to have. I have included 2 links for you: http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_7706528_stipple-quilts.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-d_cLN-ayE Hope this helps and best of luck with the quilting! :D |
I love this quilt.
Your quilt is absolutely beautiful. Do you have enough fabric left to add to the borders so you could mitre them? I think an allover stipple would be nice or maybe concentric circles. Job well done.!
Well done! :D
Very pretty, can I suggest that you miter the corners.
That is quite spectacular - especially for a new quilter :)
I firmly believe that as long as you take it slow you are good to go :D |
anything will look great. The key is to not tell anyone and they will think you did that just like the pattern called for. :-)
<Deep Breath>
Thank you everyone. I am going to put together some practice pieces so I can try out the stippling. Is it difficult to do with the whole quilt under the machine? And - do you start from the center? And - yes, I do have enough fabric left to do something with the corner. They really bug me. |
The quilt is gorgeous!
I saw it on the TV Show. I would use spinning circles with the stars. |
you did a wonderful job,
Beautiful.
beautiful
I too seen this on Fons and Porter and remember it was in on of my issues and now it is on my "quilts to make" list. You done an excellent job.
Each time we try something new that does not turn out like we wanted it to, well I look at this a different way. Not a mistake but tells you how that way looks and try working on some different borders. I made a scrap book of how to make different designs. We learn all of our lives. After all quilts are a fun thing we do for our selves. Keep on quilting. I love this design. Marvel
Wow :!:
You did a beautiful job on your first quilt. Just say the corners are as you planned them and move on to your next work. Can't wait to see the next one.
I love it. I think I would do a feather like design in the white and the celtic knot in the blue. It would make the stars pop IMHO.
hmmmm , i'd take the top border ends off and rip out some stitches so i could at least add more white going vertically, so the side border white would look like it went through the top and bottom ones, crossing under.
no help on sitching design though. |
beautiful quilt - love your choice of colours. :)

Thank you everyone for kind words and ideas. I have added two pictures fixing the borders. In one - I simply extend the white across and in the other I cover the corner with blue.
Thoughts? Extending white cover corner with blue |
Looks great to me.That's a lot of cutting/piecing for a beginner.I'd probably have it long arm quilted.Stipple quilting would look good. It's a big job if done on a regular machine.
Right on, I like your blue square in the corner.
I like covering the corner with blue, also. It looks more natural, I think; and it seems to complement the rest of the quilt. I certainly have no complaints for a first quilt. you have done a marvelous job!
