Wool Appliqué

I started to get into wool appliqué a little. Here are a couple smaller projects--a spring and fall one. I ended up hand quilting the fall one on a cotton background. I really like it and it is much faster than needle turned appliqué.

Really nice! I started to do a little wool applique last autumn. My biggest problem is finding the wool felt. It's not readily available and very expensive. I could order online but I'd like to see what I am buying first.
It's a great hobby to do while watching TV.

You did a really nice job. I have a wool applique project but haven't had time to fit it into my schedule yet. I too like that it is so much quicker than needle turn.

Cute! I like how vibrant the colours are in wool appliqué.

earthwalker 05-21-2015 05:02 AM

So pretty. You've done a great job. I love the texture and depth you get with wool applique. I plan on doing more, but have loads of baby stuff to make this year.

Yooper32 05-21-2015 05:06 AM

Great eye-candy for me. Haven't done any, but sure love the looks of them.

rvsfan 05-21-2015 05:38 AM

I machine appliqued with a straight stitch on wool. The project had stars and I found that on the points, the wool frayed. Other than that issue (a big one), I was pleased with the result.

QuiltnNan 05-21-2015 06:09 AM

both are cute

nanna-up-north 05-21-2015 06:11 AM

I love wool applique, too. And, yours are wonderful. You did a great job... even stitching. You're going to enjoy these for a long time.

You did a very nice job on both wall hanging. You should check out Primitive Garden's. They have wonderful kits with wool applique. I am working on a BOM called Primitive Gardens and I am just in love with every month's package I get in the mail.

twinkie 05-22-2015 04:44 AM

Very very cute.

Jordan 05-22-2015 05:44 AM

Those are so cute and sometimes we need a smaller project to work on and get finished. You did a great job.

Very nice work. I had a wool blanket that had some holes that needed patching. I went to the thrift store and bought some 100% wool sweaters in the colors I wanted; washed them in hot water and dried on the hottest dryer setting and ended up with felted wool that was perfect for making the appliques to mend the holes. And there's a lot of left-overs for a lot more appliques.

Where is a good source for wool applique kits and supplies? I love the look of applique, but can't stand all the prep work.

memereof8 05-22-2015 08:51 AM

I frequent Saver's and other thrift shops buying up wool skirts, wool scarfs, anything 100% wool, for my supply of wool. Once in a while I will buy a kit, however cost is becoming a problem.

solstice3 05-22-2015 11:32 AM

Very cute!!

Oksewnsew 05-22-2015 09:09 PM

If you go to Erica's online, she has 100% or 80/20 Wool pieces, very reasonable and nice weight. I have ordered from her and gotten the wool and love it. Might give her a look see.. ;o)

pahega 05-23-2015 04:34 AM

The bunny chick was a kit that I bought, but you can buy it as a pattern only. The fall wall hanging was not kit for wool, but for cotton. I made both, but had wool that I used.

pahega 05-23-2015 04:35 AM

Do you mean Primitive Gatherings?

beadywoman 05-23-2015 04:48 AM

Very nice! I love the detail you added on the little chick!

mrodarme 05-23-2015 05:43 AM

i have purchased from primitive gatherings...they have great kits; as does rachels of greenfield...their phone personnel are wonderful...they have some cute felt christmas kits with ornaments if you want something small for on the go...i have several of these bagged up, ready to grab when im off for dr appts or just in front on tv time...they are very generous with the supplies...i also pick up woolen items at my local thrift shop...lately there has been a run on winter scarfs..its a great size, giving variety of patterns and a cheap price..some have been as low as 50 cents...mens old blazers work great also...but have a lot of fabric..i need to find a trade group, but my quilters dont share my felting interests...good luck

It's a great hobby to do while watching TV.

A friend of mine bought several wool pieces of clothing at a thrift store, cut it apart, then washed the wool and used it for her applique with great results. I haven't tried it, but it would definately be less expensive.....just a thought.

Mamia 05-23-2015 02:42 PM

Love these. I've done one wool applique and yours make me want to do another. I love the one I made and yours.

I did that, too. I bought some men's suit jackets and a couple of women's wool knit sweaters. Put them in my washer with a little detergent, washed them with hot water, and then dried them on the hottest setting. I will cut them apart now. I got the sweaters for 50 cents and the jackets for $5. Using new wool is so cost prohibitive. I'd appreciate hearing anyone's sources of wool.

zelda2 05-26-2015 05:21 AM

You pieces are fantastic!

I have done and still do a lot of wool applique over the years. All is from used wool clothing or blankets bought at thrift stores, cut apart, (don't bother trying to save fabric from the seams) washed, dried and ironed. Make sure pieces say 100% wool! It makes the most beautiful completed pieces!

heather1949 05-26-2015 05:54 AM

Vibrant colors they look awesome :)

Painiacs 05-26-2015 07:06 AM

Very nice, I'm doing my first one, was a kit, I will definitely look for another!!

faykilgore 05-26-2015 07:39 AM

Great work and they both make you smile. I love the look of the wool applique but haven't tried it yet.

fawne44 05-26-2015 09:12 AM

These are adorable - I need to try this sometime. I've envied people doing this for so long. Enjoy!

gmcsewer 05-29-2015 08:36 AM

I have done quite a bit of this and did all the preparation of the fabrics. Foreign made garments tend to shrink better. US treats the wool so it won't shrink. Sue Spargo is a site where she has felted wool, thread, buttons and other color coordinated items.

Felt Christmas Stocking: I had the itch to do wool applique. I saw a kit at HL for $10. What was I thinking? Not the same thing at all. I started it this morning. I'm in a quilting slow spot.
All the sequins and beads!!!!
And then sewing the pieces together doesn't come out nicely.
