That is a good looking cow. Is she a prize winning milk producer? The quilt is also a winner. The subject matter is a piece of "Americana", but I see you are north of the border. Can we name this quilt the "Canadian Cutie"? Great work.

Beautiful, I'd like to try that. It caused me to remember a quilt pieced by a retired dentist from OK, I believe, his last name is Locke, it's huge, called "The Supper" done on the same principle of the tiny squares. He toured with his quilt and I saw it several years ago in Conway, AR. You can see it at www.thesupper.net.

What a great job you did.

carolynjo 04-08-2011 06:36 PM

Love your work. I believe the term is "blocking" or "blocked" when the quilt is pinned and stretched to make it straight again after all those tiny pieces. I used to knit sweaters and always had to block them into shape after washing. I love your avatar; did you use a pattern or is it an original. carolynjo

I started with a photo, enlarged it on a photocopier and drew a 1" grid on it. All the pieces in the pieced version are 1" finished, though each of those might have had several seams if the colours landed that way.

I took it to be stretched as after all this work, I didn't want to learn on this one, and risk ruining it! It's about 24"x27".

For comparison, I'm posting both the original photo and my pieced work.

WONDERFUL !!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes ... they stretched it on a special board (forget the name), It's kind of like foam core in the centre, but very hard on the outside, so it won't bend and warp as they stretch. The foam like centre lets them stick pins into the edge until they have it fully stretched and allows adjustment if needed while doing so.

Board was covered first with a layer of batting to allow some quilted padding. Then framed.

Great tip!! Thank you !
