Would you like to see ??

This is a project I finished this winter. I recognize it's a little different subject matter, and certainly not one for everyone to like.

I started with a photo, enlarged it on a photocopier and drew a 1" grid on it. All the pieces in the pieced version are 1" finished, though each of those might have had several seams if the colours landed that way.

I took it to be stretched as after all this work, I didn't want to learn on this one, and risk ruining it! It's about 24"x27".

For comparison, I'm posting both the original photo and my pieced work.

CompulsiveQuilter 04-07-2011 07:08 AM

What do you mean "stretched"? Like a canvas, on a wooden frame?

abdconsultant 04-07-2011 07:09 AM

that is soooo cool!

Yes ... they stretched it on a special board (forget the name), It's kind of like foam core in the centre, but very hard on the outside, so it won't bend and warp as they stretch. The foam like centre lets them stick pins into the edge until they have it fully stretched and allows adjustment if needed while doing so.

Board was covered first with a layer of batting to allow some quilted padding. Then framed.

Thanks!! Honestly, I didn't follow any technques. I guess I somewhat did a paper piecing concept, but no paper piecing was done.

Do you have any links where people have done similar?

Thanks!
As I said earlier, the subject matter isn't for everyone!

I'm proud of the results ... and hope that others can appreciate the results, and perhaps inspire them to other projects, even if the subject isn't for them!

sueisallaboutquilts 04-07-2011 07:51 AM

I love it...I just moved from the BIG city to a smaller rural area and LOVE the horses, cows, donkeys, goats, etc that I get to see while driving the back roads. I must admit some days they are the only things that bring a smile to this BIG city girl.

BevF 04-07-2011 08:54 AM

Great job!

countrymaid 04-07-2011 08:59 AM

Wow, That's a great show picture and the quilt block is amazing. You must have been good at doing registration papers. I'm truly impressed with your work. The Hoard's Dariyman with the cow judging on the front page were always my favorite issues. Although my soft spot is for jerseys. I miss my cows. Sigh...

mtspools 04-07-2011 09:01 AM

excellent

QuiltnCowgirl 04-07-2011 09:03 AM

Ha! Love your siggie!
I think we come somewhat from the same mold except I could only claim the husband and animals!

I was born and raised with Holsteins, then Jerseys entered our lives and found my soft spot. I've been thinking about doing a Jersey, though their shading is not so simplified as the B+Ws! :)

Registrations ... nope! We always did pics! :) And yes, me too, my ♥ is still there on the farm!

debcavan 04-07-2011 09:08 AM

wow, you are too clever. It i really awesome

Jim's Gem 04-07-2011 09:13 AM

Great job!!!! I think it turned out beautiful!!!!

countrymaid 04-07-2011 09:18 AM

Cows are gone. Now we have dorset sheep. We wanted to maintain the buildings and pastures and not be as labor intensive. Even traded the square baler for a round one. No more unloading bales for me.

We both work full time off the farm. I miss the day to day planning and working together. The just being on the same property...it's hard to explain. It's just a satisfaction of the heart.

suezquilts 04-07-2011 09:20 AM

wow!

I totally understand! The squares left very early in our farming life and we were one of the first with rounds. When we moved farms, that was one of the requirements that the barn could be converted to only use rounds! Best.Thing.Ever!!! :)

I had to wind things down when my husband took ill ... then later sold it all a few years after he passed. I still have my aggie connections to help my ♥ ... just not the same!

I don't think I could ever become a city girl! :)

sharoney 04-07-2011 09:22 AM
