Finished my first quilt for the Wounded Warrior program. I have an appointment tomorrow morning to present it to the receipient at the local VA hospital. I know I'll cry!

I've got the next WW quilt partially done and have attached a preview of the blocks. The blocks will alternate red corner/blue corner and there will be sashing (the off-white with blue stars) between the blocks.

Great quilts for a great cause. Your tears will be tears of joy, not sadness this time.

Jim's Gem 06-06-2010 09:21 PM

Beautiful quilt!!! Thanks so much for caring for our Service men and women!!!

Boscobd 06-06-2010 09:26 PM

Thank you for the replies. It's something I feel very strongly about. Yes - will be tears of joy I'm sure!

Glorious quilt...and the other two blocks are fantastic. I am sure the recipient will treasure it.

I had not quite realised the extent/how many wounded American service persons there are from the current conflict/s. I watch television whilst ironing and caught part of an Oprah programme in which Oprah was visiting with wounded service personnel and discussing the statistics. I was stunned...they were all so young and so very brave. As a mother my heart goes out to them and their families. I am sure the quilts made so lovingly will help them immensely in their recovery and give them comfort during the tough days.

My inspriation comes from an AF Colonel with whom I work. He has expressed to me how much these warriors really appreciate and cherish even the slightest effort to recognize their sacrifices. Making quilts for these brave and self-less warfighters is the least I can do to say "thank you" for what they do as they put themselves in harm's way every day to ensure that we continue to enjoy the freedoms that we assume will always be ours....

As a Mother of a wounded warrior the quilts are a wonderful loving gift that builds up their spirts. I work with the Moms of Miltary service persons in Sonoma county. We have since moved to Folsom but still keep in touch with the MOMs The work they do and all the other groups that do these wonders it heartwarming. The quilts are something these boys and girls need to comfort them. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for thinking of our babies.

janice4 06-07-2010 06:28 AM

Wonderful quilts !! Yes you will cry ;) but it is so rewarding to be involved in giving back to out military...for their sacrifices are many as is their families. I quilt for Quilts of Valor IN temecula. Each friday we meet at a local quilt shop to work on * kits * that get put into tops and so forth. My son served 5 years for the NAVY. So many oppose the war but we need to remember those who fight on our behalf and honor them period. So many ways to do that. My husband flies for business a lot and recently exchanged his first class ticket with a young soldier. Just took the ticket out of his hand and handed him the new one with out making a fuss..later in the flight the pilot thanked the group of soldiers flying home that day and later while hubby was in back middle seat near noisy engine lOL.. the attendant brought him a sandwich, beer and ice cream. Those around wondered why the special treatment. LOl Thank a soldier today :). for your freedom.

Sallyjane 06-07-2010 09:18 AM

Your quilt is beautiful and the next one will be great too. Doesn't it just warm your heart to give a little of your time to one who has given so much? I made a Quilt of Valor last year. I am awaiting shipment of 3 uniforms from my son. From the uniforms I am going to make a memory quilt for a nine year old girl who lost her daddy. He was deployed with my son.

GrandmaLola 06-07-2010 09:19 AM

Love the red, white and blue!

fliedermaus 06-07-2010 09:39 AM

That is a lovely quilt and the blocks for the next one look great too. I haven't heard of people gifting quilts to wounded servicemen before, maybe because I live in England and sadly, many people are ignorant, disrespectful or extremely hurtful towards our troops.

It is a fantastic way to show these men/women that we appreciate their sacrifices. It's things like this that make me have hope for the human condition. Well done, such a good cause and a lovely quilt.

Thank you all for your responses. Today went well at the VA Hospital. The receipient was very surprised. It was an incredible experience and really reinforced my drive to continue making quilts for our wounded warriors. (yes - I cried!).

:):):) big smile way to go !!!!! :)

Pam 06-07-2010 08:51 PM

It is nice that you live close to a hospital and get to see where your quilt goes. My stuff just gets packed into a box that the postman takes.

You and others like you are SO wonderful to think of these poor fellows , know how this will be appreciated.

smagruder 06-08-2010 02:37 AM

As the parent of the military, I appreciate so much what you are doing. I support several groups... Special Operations Wounded Warriors and Wounded Warriors. I know that from all the information I have that your gift will inspire our wounded heroes. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Who knows, someday it might be my son who is wounded and in need of encouragement.

Wounded or not they always need encouragement.. our local chapter of valor does quilts for anyone presently serving, has served in the past and any family who has lost a loved one who served. We have been part of many wonderful stories and are always blessed by the recipients. I pray for your sons safety and life. As a gold star mom I understand first hand how much they sacrifice for our freedom. God bless him and your family.
