I am teaching myself to quilt. Here is my first block! My dear MIL sent me her featherweight for my effort. I am excited that it is turning out at all!

Dragonfly Nana 03-24-2010 05:00 PM

Nice job! I love the colors too.

red roses 03-24-2010 05:03 PM

You did a great job! I really like those colors, especially polka-dots.

Ninnie 03-24-2010 05:05 PM

You are doing great!1 keep going!

raptureready 03-24-2010 05:10 PM

Keep up the great work. Love the colors. Hang onto and take care of that Featherweight. There are quilters out there that would almost give up their first born for one. Okay maybe not their first born child but their first born stash. LOL! I bought my highschool English/French teacher's when she went into a nursing home and it wasn't cheap. Those are really a treasure, just keep it cleaned and oiled and it will last for a long, long time.
I'm looking forward to seeing this block in your first quilt!

Annaleehunter 03-24-2010 05:14 PM

Thank you all for your support! I will post the finished quilt....someday! I am thinking of a solid brown border around each square. If I do the border I can make a twin blankie instead of a baby sized blanket.

dkabasketlady 03-24-2010 05:18 PM

Good job! I love the colors!

JanetM 03-24-2010 05:30 PM

Aaahh, another quilter is born. You do know that this is an addiction, but one that will bring you many rewards. You are doing great!

Stitchnripper 03-24-2010 05:33 PM

If you make some blocks with brown borders and some with blue and then alternate them I think you'll like the finished product much better than just using brown. Or if you use all brown then use blue for the sashing between them. Who knows? by the time you get them done, set together and add your outer borders you may have a king size quilt! :D

Jim's Gem 03-24-2010 06:54 PM

Very nice!

gramqlts 03-24-2010 06:56 PM

Great colors and your points are fabulous. I have quilted for about a hundred years and sometimes my points still don't match. Maybe that's because I'm getting blind in my old age...lol. Keep up the good work sweety. You're starting off with a bang!!!!!

Gramof6 03-24-2010 07:40 PM

Aren't you just loving it? I sure love your fabrics & think you are off with a bang! This will make a very striking quilt.

mosaicthinking 03-25-2010 01:11 AM

Well done. It's such fun when you're new to quilting and each block is an accomplishment. As the others have said, it gets addictive in no time at all.

Rebecca VLQ 03-25-2010 03:07 AM

Very, very nice! I love pink and brown, and blue and brown. <3

reneebobby 03-25-2010 03:13 AM

Well done, keep up the practice. You will soon be designing your own blocks and quilts.

You have begun a new and exciting chapter in your life - featherweight and fabric. Welcome!!!!

Jingle 03-25-2010 05:43 AM

You did a good job, try to even the intersections up a little more. Just trying to be helpful, it takes a while to get it all figured out.

hokieappmom 03-25-2010 06:26 AM

Great job and I love the colors! Be sure to post it when you are finished.

Watch Eleanor Burns' show or videos. She great at "marrying up" her seams. But, don't stress out over it. When I look at some of my first attempts your's looks professional! Some of my corners were 1/4" or more off. Watch all the tv shows and videos that you can, read, take a class at a local fabric shop, etc. It's a great skill to learn and pass on to future generations. I personally come from several generations of quilters and can't wait until my daughter shows a little more interest. Somewhere on here is a "Newbie" helpful hints thread and it's pretty good if you can find it.

bstanbro 03-25-2010 07:50 AM

Beautiful work! I started quilting a year and a half ago, and I'm hopelessly hooked. And prolific. I've been finishing a quilt a month. I'm disabled, and so lots of time to sew.

n2scraplvr 03-25-2010 07:50 AM

Fabulous job! You're now on your way to fun with quilting!! So many possibilities....so much fun...and welcome to the board from VA! You will love all that you see and learn! happy quilting!! :D :D

Roberta 03-25-2010 07:54 AM

Ditto on the fabric colors and pattern. You're doing a great job and the colors are lovely together.

Annaleehunter 03-25-2010 03:07 PM

Thank you all so much for your encouragement. I will post the top when finished. Thanks for the tip re: Eleanor Burns. I will look for those. I just wished I had learned to sew from Grandma before she died. I did learn to crochet, though. Thank you, thank you... I love this board!

wvdek 03-25-2010 03:22 PM

Wonderful! good for you. A Featherweight? Geesh, hang on to it or it may walk off in the night.

beginnerquilter 03-25-2010 03:33 PM
