I found this today at one of those perpetual yard sale places...the operator buys storage units. He thought it was just some fabric so it cost $2!
This quilt top is approximately 67 x 80 inches and is both hand and machine pieced. Old fabric. It is so well done. The border fabric is sort of brittle and in places there is damage. How would you finish it? Use the original border, but make it narrow so that damage is removed? Or remove the original border and replace? I think the best thing to do is send it to me:):):). I think I would remove the outside border and replace with a reproduction fabric.

You probably don't want to hear this but the proper thing to do to restore the damaged areas is to applique a new border over the old. Don't remove the old one unless it's badly soiled by something you can't identify. If you can find a similar vintage fabric to make the repair the quilt will retain it's monetary value as a vintage/antique quilt.

Great find!! Did you find it here in Pahrump?
Great find!
Yes...in Pahrump. The big brown RV garage 'yard sale' that is off of Homestead. Most weekends he has white signs with red letter 'sandwich boards' placed along Homestead.
WOW!!!
The damage isn't bad, just looks like some clusters of pin holes. There a few in the pieced blocks, but nothing that interferes with the integrity of the block.
Beautiful. Lucky you
I think I would be tempted to remove the original border so the finished product would last. It is lovely. What a find. And for only $2 Wow.
I wouldn't do anything to it. Its so brittle it might just ruin it. If you finish it ,, it will no longer be an antique? It will have a labbel and would make it finished as of Oct 2011..
great find.
Beautiful find. I agree with others - replace the border. I'm sure that will be a whole lot easier than trying to patch, piece and repair the damage. Enjoy!
WOW, beautiful quilt
What a beauty. I would sure want to use it if it were me, but I would also hate to lose the value by replacing the original border. I'd be tempted to do the restoration and use it very carefully. But since there are no quilt police here, do whatever makes you the happiest. And enjoy your great find.

All good advice. To me the value is $2. I appreciate and admire all the work that went into the quilt top.
If I don't finish it or have someone else finish it, then it will sit in a chest, unused, as it has for decades. Seems a shame to hide this lovely work. |
I would remove the border - boy what a wonderful yard sale find.... don't have sales like that around here. So happy for you.
Nice
that is cool
What a deal!!! and it's beautiful...!
I would replace the boarder too. :) It's beautiful!!!
very nice.

I personally would remove the border now and replace it with period fabric if you can. If not, a muslin would work since there is so much color already. But, if the fabric is giving way now, the rest is sure to follow.
By the way ... What a find! |
Pretty find! Maybe find some repro fabrics, and do applique if necessary.
Wow! Did you have a four leaf clover with you?
Awesome find! It would have been much more had he known what he had. I would replace the border. Thanks for sharing.
Wow-what a treasure!
Oh my word! Awesome find!
