I went to a Fire Dept yard sale today and bought a few things. The picture is of a Hand pieced spool quilt. Some of the fabric spools are made from feed sacks. It is tied with yarn, no binding and the "batting" is pieces of old blankets. The back is flannel. I think I paid way too much for it, but I couldnt pass it up....grand total for it...$1.00.

I am hand sewing one just like that! I call it an apple core block. I enjoy it, but who knows when I'll ever finish it! You have a nice prize there!

Such a find! So glad you had a great day. A happy quilt has a new home and will be loved and cared for. What do you think you will use for the binding? ? Feed sacks ?

I had once made a scrap version of the apple core design from old clothes and craft fabric scraps. It looked much like the one you bought but it was tied with embroidery floss, backed with my first adult bedsheet, and bordered with lace. My daughter used the quilt literally until the threads feel apart. It was such a conversation piece for us to tell the stories that went with each piece of fabric and it's first life. She treasured it so much I endup giving the worn top to my mother to make a stuffed animal out of and my daughter still uses the once peach backing that is now white and pilled and doesn't use the new quilt I made her to replace it.

I am piecing one just like it & it is called an Apple Core. I cut it with the Accuquilt cutter. I am forcing my self to finish it and I will NEVER sew another one. I am glad I didn't buy the die.

carolaug 07-23-2011 04:41 AM

I have that die...I started sewing it...I gave up....I do not like sewing them. You are good for finishing it. I will end up cutting my core pieces up into another shape.
