My day started out Great..DH gone to work, and no Grandkids to watch today. So i got ambitious and clean my house, did the laundry then decided to do my Grandson's quilt. It was all going along so well, i should have known. After getting it all quilted together (stich in the ditch) I wanted to serge the edges as it's got a satin backing and needed satin binding. Half way thru i got my left index finger caught in the serger!!! Don't ask me how i did it I don't know. That has Never happened ever! All afternoon i kept looking at my finger saying "stupid, stupid, stupid" By 5:00 the throbing stopped enough for me to continue so here it is!!!!!! (And i was worried about doing a satin backing) LOL

So sorry about your accident, but it's a beautiful project. You did a great job. Hope your finger heals quickly. I somehow got my thumb under the presser foot recently and couldn't get it loose, and the needle went threw my nail. Ouch!

Glassquilt 09-12-2011 03:55 PM

debcavan 09-12-2011 03:58 PM

I am much better tonight. My finger is black and blue but the throb is slight. My DH laughed his a-- off where he heard. He kept asking "how did you do that" I still don't know!!! All he says is "good thing it wasn't the middle one" Such a comic!!!

suebee 09-12-2011 04:35 PM

I'm so sorry about your finger. I too am proof that you can quilt with only 9 fingers. In 2006 I had a work accident and a saw blade took my right index finger. I have about an inch still there. I am even a receptionist that sits and types on a computer all day. I have gotten pretty fast at that too. So it is possible. I am so glad to hear that your finger is still there though. Here's to more quilting and be careful of the sergers they can be dangerous. :)
Blassings!

quilting.addict 09-12-2011 04:38 PM

I had no idea you could get your finger caught in a serger!! You bet your sweet bippy I'll be wayyyyyy more careful!! so sorry, but what a cute quilt!

blueangel 09-12-2011 04:40 PM

Cute

QM 09-12-2011 04:43 PM

Ouch! Been there, done that. You are making a fine quilt. Take care of yurself.

spartan quilter 09-12-2011 04:45 PM

I got goose bumps reading of all the mishaps that others have had. I once got the tip of my middle finger nearly cut off by a sickle mower, used to cut hay for cattle. I ended up with 2 pins in the 2 bones of my finger, lots of stitches, a cast, and luckily, the finger looks pretty good, and I have great dexterity in it. The worst part of the whole ordeal, was that I worked in a bar, and the guys just thought it was a hoot, that my middle finger had a cast on it and I was giving everyone the finger. LOL

cashmommy11 09-12-2011 05:19 PM

think i need a ice pack now .. hope you finger feels better soon. love the quilt

I wonder 09-12-2011 05:28 PM

Holy cow! Take care of you finger. That had to be painful! Cute quilt with such a story!

Sewfine 09-12-2011 06:13 PM

OMG! Sorry to hear that. So are you saying you lost one finger. My serger has a guard on it. It turned out to be a beautiful quilt.

mandyk 09-12-2011 06:22 PM

Manages to sew my fingernail the other day, which shook me up. Guess my attention wandered. Can't imagine the serger. uGH. The quilt is lovely. You are one strong woman.

SMR 09-12-2011 07:18 PM

Ouch Hope you heal fast.

deedum 09-12-2011 07:47 PM

Oh, your quilt is lovely, and yet I feel your throbbing pain!

Babs194068 09-13-2011 04:04 AM

OMG I can't imagine how bad that hurt.

jitkaau 09-13-2011 04:07 AM

Hope you are healing well. Your story has made me more conscious of the serger as I do most of my sewing on mine.I never believed I could sew through a finger until I did it last year(and there was a foot on the machine!).I can only imagine a serger to be 4 times the stab.Keep the other nine fingers safe.

chairjogger 09-13-2011 04:09 AM

very cute ! you finger stuck is my nightmare! I have parkinsons.. hands go left right. needle up and down.. zig zag stitch for me is NOT GOOD on the brain.. I have to fight to keep my hands from moving the way they want to while ON meds.. ha ha..

Ell

quilter68 09-13-2011 04:45 AM

And there is no blood on the terrific quilt.

Hope your finger is getting well!

sparkys_mom 09-13-2011 04:47 AM

Your quilt is very nice. Do you have a current tetanus shot?

JoyjoyMarie 09-13-2011 05:03 AM

Sending good thoughts for happy healing. Quilt is cute and done!! (Done counts for a lot in my world!)

grannyp70 09-13-2011 05:04 AM

OUCH!! How is your finger? that make me hurt all over reading about your finger. Love the quilt though, good job.

shirley35 09-13-2011 05:16 AM

Your quilt turned out very well even with a stitched finger. I have sewed my finger also and boy does it hurt, of course it will heal but never as soon as you want.

SandyMac 09-13-2011 05:16 AM

OMG I have never heard of any one getting hung up on there serge. That would just scare me to death.

Homespun 09-13-2011 06:03 AM

Cute quilt--be very careful next time!

joyce j 09-13-2011 06:04 AM

Sorry about your finger getting caught, I did not get caught but cut the tip of finger with the scissors. Did not realize how sharp the were, but all healed up now.

Wagoza 09-13-2011 06:05 AM

Well at least you didn't add a little color to the quilt. It looks great! Hope your finger is healing well.

ILove2quilt 09-13-2011 06:09 AM

So sorry about your finger. I hurt just thinking about it. The quilt is beaufiful.

grannypat7925 09-13-2011 07:11 AM

Great quilt but I am still shaking thinking about catching a finger in the Serger! Hope it heals quickly.

joycecil 09-13-2011 07:14 AM

Wish I was as easy as kissing it to make it better.

Kayaker26 09-13-2011 07:42 AM

I am so impressed NO BLOOD ON THE QUILT. Every time I cut myself I seem to get blood on the quilt...glad you better!

Rock Lady 09-13-2011 08:05 AM

The quilt is so cute. Sure hope your finger gets better soon. Your accident will make me more cautious using my serger and my sewing machine.
