I was just talking with my daughter, who was telling me about my granddaughter's 1st grade school journal she had recently seen at her parent/teacher conference.
I started last Spring making each of our kids, their spouses, and our grandkids, a 'birthday quilt' for their birthdays. 20 of them in all! Allie recieved her's last August, a 'Hannah Montana Church Dash'! Allie, who is in 1st grade, and 6 1/2 years old, wrote quite a long journal entry about them! She remembered each one! My daughter said she had gone into great detail about each, what colors I used, etc! I would have never dreamed the quilts would have made such an impact on her! I'm guessing she knew of the love and caring that went into each one, and it was that 'specialness' which stayed with her. ~ that or she's going to be a quilter herself in the near future! ;) I just wanted to share that with you all. Blessings, Diana :) :) Allie & her quilt 08/22/09 |
What a wonderful story! She just might become a writer for quilting stories herself. Beautiful quilt also!
WOW but you have been busy. Love the quilt. My granddaughter's name is Allie too. She is 6 years old. She has been sewing strips of fabric and calling it a quilt., I am sooo proud of her... enjoy your quilting. ciao
How wonderful! Beautiful granddaughter, great quilt! Next time you are together, you could ask if she wants to make a quilt for her doll... Bet she'd love to follow in your footsteps!
What a great tribute to grandma...........
What a wonderful story to tell about her quilt and grandma.
Thanks everyone! :) I just never dreamed that she'd even really notice everyone else's quilts, or write about them!
Something must have really struck her about them, to remember such detail about each. And I don't have all 20 done yet, still have 7 to go.... ;) |
That is a wondeful story and such a touching thing to do!!!
How sweet that story is!! Sounds like a budding quilter. :D My grandchildren often bring me a quilt I've made for them, and say something like "you made me this". I think it does make an impact on them, and I think they will remember it, even if they are very small when they get it.
That's just wonderful. These are the memories that last... and that keep us quilting!
Oh my gosh--how awesome is that!!! She'll write the stories of her life! It's so much fun--and inspiring and eye opening to see what means so much to kids.
sew sweet
what a great story. Now, that's when you know your quilt is loved.
What a wonderful story. It's amazing when we realize how much children really notice about the world around them.
That's a beautiful quilt too! |
How heartwarming for you...and for us! I guess we just really don't get too many confirmations of how much what we do means to the little ones...your DGD thinks your quilts are special...and you know she does...that's special! Did I miss the finish of the Argyle that you were working on for the daughter? Did I remember all that correctly?
Thanks so much everyone! :)
Bobbinwinder, nope you didn't miss the argyle. I have it almost quilted, will probably have quilted tonight, then the binding tomorrow..... I'll post pictures tomorrow or Sunday, when I give it to her! Thanks for remembering it! :) :) |
What a precious story!
Oh, that's not one I could ever forget, MollieSue! I just may have to make one of those...I really loved it from the first glance...and now I'm so excited that you're so close to finished...hoooray for you! I'll be looking for the post!
i bet it made all the hours worked on that quilt so worthwhile!
How amazing is that?!! I agree with Quilter7X I think she is going to grow up and write quilt stories  or maybe a detective with her eye to detail. Anyway the quilt is great!
I think it just goes to show that even if we don't think our quilts make that much of an impact sometimes - they do! And you never really know in what ways, or for who! :)
And Allie did really love her's, but also apparently paid attention to the others as well! :) |

That story is SOOOOOO sweet...... I Love the quilt and the Grands are beautiful...... Thanks for sharing....... bopeep |
Oh how sweet! Did she bring it for show & tell?
Don't you see what wonderful memories you are creating by quilting? And, for what it's worth, you have a wonderful family that actually appreciates your efforts and understands what a big job making a quilt is!
As for that adorable grandchild, I am looking forward to seeing her as a news analyst or reading her books when she grows up! |
Very, very cool! Thanks for sharing that with us! :D
Such a sweet story! I hope Mom gets the journal at end of shool year.
Thanks for sharing! It always amazes me how intuitive children are. She recognized the love and caring that went into not only her quilt, but the others as well...and that you personalized each one so they were all different.
Thank you! :)
No, I don't think she ever took it for show & tell, she mostly wrote about everyones quilts that I had made. And yes, I am much blessed in that all my kids & grandkids appreciate their quilts. :) My steps, are more so so, at least so far. But that's ok too, it's me who wants to make them. :) |
Yeap, my daughter said she'll make me a copy when Allie gets to bring her journal home. :)
Yes, kids are really intuitive, they always recognize the love and caring. :) |
Ahhh, an original "old soul" of a child...what a doll.
What a wonderful thing Diana! Quite had me tearing up here! :-D And what a little sweetie Allie is! :-D
What a special GD you have. Keep on passing this love we have for our craft to the younger ones. I'm sure she'll have some more wonderful things to write about when the other 7 quilts are finished. Wow!, that's definitely enough to write a whole book about.
You have been a good teagher to your GD. She knows quilts are important because G.ma has made them.Besides she has pick-up that not everyone else gets one of your quilts and family gets them at special times. You should be so proud because you have made a childhood memory for her that will stick with her for life. My youngest son, is a grown man now, but when I used to sew quilts together by hand, when he was little, he always wanted a needle and thread and pieces of material to sew on too. He's not interested in it now but that was thirty years ago.
Thank you! :) :)
Yes, they know not everyone gets one. My DGS, Allie's brother who is 9, was talking about his father's BD coming up, and said he knew I wasn't making him (his father) a quilt. - we've had a lot of issues with ex-SIL, and the kids know it. So maybe that's another aspect as to why the quilts made such an impression, because not everyone gets one? :) |
My husbands grandmother( who is dead now) made quilt tops for every one of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had 100 quilt tops made and given away when she died at 95 years old.Our youngest son was only a baby but she had one finished for him. That didn't include all the other quilts she had made and sold to other people, over the years. She started quilting as a child and had quilted all her life.I got in on hand quilting the ones she gave to my 2 boys.
Oh MollieSue what a lucky grandma you are and what a lucky girl to have you for a grandma!
That is such a very wonderful story. To know that your grand daughter at such a young age knows the love that went into the quilt and to know what an impact it made in her life. thank you for sharing such a beautiful story.Penny
Awe, Diana, what a wonderful story!! You have given her memories that she will keep forever! And I do believe she is a quilter in the making!! :-D
That's wonderful! Gives you a good feeling
Nothing is better than when you get that warm feeling.
You know you've made an impression. So sweet!! |
