I have started a scrappy quilt. I've been a quilter for years but only recently got into scrappy. I don't have a large stash but I have been given small squares of various fabric and decided to make a postage stamp quilt. My squares being 2" before sewing. I want the quilt to have a country feel.
My question is should I go all scrappy for the body and then add a border and maybe do some applique' in it, should I use the 4 X 4 squares with sashing around them or make them larger and do the same and which background do you think would be best or what color would you choose.
Thanks for the input. Scrappy is new to me and I've seen some I really love and some, not so much. If you'd like to add to my stash with small scraps PM me. :?:

I would say #1...just seems to make those squares stand out!

grammy17 03-15-2011 07:28 AM

I think you squares are beautiful. I like the plain color background. I think it shows the colors in the squares more. What ever you decide it will be wonderful.

dakotamaid 03-15-2011 07:29 AM

No. 2, I like the brown. Than, depending on how much blue in your scraps, I would favor a blueish border with some floral applique. That would be truly country IMO.

rosemaynes 03-15-2011 07:29 AM

I like #3, to me the blocks stand out and has more color. Just my 2 cents.

redturtle 03-15-2011 07:30 AM

the first one...the darker brown would look great for the sashing...the squares pop

the other two colors they just kinda blend into

Prism99 03-15-2011 07:34 AM

I like #3. The other two have an overall dulling effect for me.

PaperPrincess 03-15-2011 07:58 AM

I like 1, with maybe 3 for the outer border?

lydialee 03-15-2011 08:08 AM

I love #3 with the squares.

Jennalyn 03-15-2011 08:12 AM

If you're going for sashing, I think that #1 would be the nicest against your pretty scrappy squares. Perhaps #3 as a border around that?

LindaBN 03-15-2011 08:20 AM

I think #1 is very nice - really makes the colors look rich.

belmer 03-15-2011 09:41 AM

I like #3 but I also think a black on black for your background would really make your blocks pop out if you have any on hand.

Scrap Happy 03-15-2011 10:07 AM

I like #3 and love scrap quilts. Please post a picture when this is finished.

wildyard 03-15-2011 10:31 AM

If you want a bright look, I'd use 3 for sashing then 1 for border. I kind of like the mellow look of 2, and would use 1 for border and binding. For me that is a more tranquil look for a sleeping quilt.

quilterjody 03-15-2011 10:33 AM

I love #3 as it gives it a more old-fashioned feel which I love.

SueDor 03-15-2011 11:08 AM

I like the 1st and 2nd choice.

lileth1374 03-15-2011 11:58 AM

Number 1

Mariposa 03-15-2011 12:00 PM

I vote for #1 for sashings. Makes the colors richer. IMHO

JCL in FL 03-15-2011 01:22 PM

It looks like #1 is the winner so far and that was my first choice but it's nice to know others feel the same and I'm not way off. I may use the others in the border.

Annaquilts 03-15-2011 01:27 PM

Oh the yummy orangy fabric on the bottom. It gives it an authentic retro look.

BizzieLizzie 03-15-2011 02:27 PM

I like the combination with fabric no 2. That gives it more of a country feel to me. Whatever you choose, it will turn out real nice. Best wishes.

Number one drabs it down and number two brightens it up. Just depends on which way you are leaning. I'd choose number one. Your blocks are wonderful. I would use 2 inch sashing between the blocks, and make a stop border of the same fabric around the edges. Then do a checkerboard border of scrappy squares or 2 x 4 inch piano keys. You are definately on the right track. Your neautrals really pull the scraps together for a cohesive feel. BRAVO for you stepping out of your box and trying something new.

I like the #2 best and WOULD NOT put a border on it. I love scrap quilts, like yours, that are border-less. "If" you do put a border on, I'd make it a scrappy border and not a plain one.

As you can see, everyone has their own opinion! Go with what you like.

kimscruzer 03-16-2011 03:04 AM

I vote for #1

Stitchnripper 03-16-2011 03:56 AM

I love your scrappy quilt. I like #1 and might consider the same as the border and binding. Just my thoughts. I did a scrappy without sashing but made the border, binding and backing all the same and I love the way it turned out. But, it is your quilt, so do what pleases you the most. And then please post a picture of the finished product so we can admire it.

jtquilts 03-16-2011 04:02 AM

I love the dark brown of #1. To me the blocks pop more with the dark. Love the look!

Winnemay 03-16-2011 05:17 AM

Make it a true scrappy and sew all the squares together with no sashing and an outside border to finish it off!

Yooper32 03-16-2011 05:34 AM

I like #2 for sashing and would wait to decide border until you have all the blocks done and sashed.

roadrunr 03-16-2011 07:23 AM

I like # 3 the best, but the other two colors would also work. I also like scrappy quilts and am planning on making quite a few scrappy quilts. But not all scrappy quilts look scrappy, if you know what I mean.

Emma S 03-16-2011 07:44 AM

Just proof that if you ask three people you will get three different answers. It probably comes down to which one you like best but #3 would be my choice.

IDquilter 03-16-2011 08:45 AM

I vote for #1 with applique in the border, it would be awesome. Make sure you post a pic when done, I can't wait to see it.

fayza 03-16-2011 08:49 AM

I would say #1 it makes the variety of the squares stand out :)

JudeWill 03-16-2011 09:10 AM

I like the first one, also.

Aquarius 03-16-2011 09:15 AM

I like #3, I think the blocks stand out better.

Margie 03-16-2011 10:08 AM

Three for a little brightness

Pamela Artman 03-16-2011 10:15 AM

I too, like the mellow look of 2, and think it would look more country. Seems to be closer in value which blends instead of stands out. I like 1 also because the blocks really stand out, but I don't think it looks as country. And I love the idea of a border with applique on it. Anxious to see pics of finished top!! Be sure and post!!

How about a thin border of #3 and the outside border of #1.

sewmorethings 03-16-2011 12:13 PM

I think Number 1 makes the squares pop

Janquiltz 03-16-2011 03:54 PM

My vote would be #3 for the sashing, #1 for an inside narrow border, #3 for a larger outside border, and really like your idea of doing some applique on the outer border. Simple vine with some simple flowers and leaves (and continuing in the scrappy theme). You could even scatter a few flowers and leaves on the quilt body. Just a thought.
