Zelda Quilt for deployed son

1 Attachment(s)
Just to refresh your memories..... http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...p-t202369.html

So I've finally gotten the top done!! I am pleased enough with it since it was the first time I've really imagined something and made it work. But...... I have to admit I'm a little disappointed. I envisioned it more "Zelda"ish. I wish I'd made the blocks bigger so that I'd have been able to make the shield bigger. I've never ever done applique and I'm really pleased with how well it turned out. I think I did a pretty good job on that. I also wish I could have added the sword, but I didn't think about it until I'd already added the shield and the sword is placed behind the shield. If I had time, I'd practice, but he just got home from Afghanistan and is really excited about his quilt so I'd like to just give it to him for Christmas. I'm going to get a back (suggestions would be welcome!!) and get it quilted. Thanks again everyone for all the help! This board is an INVALUABLE resource and everyone on it is just simply wonderful. <3

That's a very nice quilt, although honestly I have no real idea who Zelda is (except a character in a game). I'd consider more of that pretty gold fabric for the backing if you're going to purchase something. I'll bet he will be thrilled to get this at Christmas. Tell him thank you for serving his country (from an Air Force mom).

Grandma Peg 11-27-2012 07:55 PM

Very nice quilt. It will mean a lot to him. Thank him for us for serving.

mighty 11-27-2012 07:57 PM

Really great quilt!!

cathyvv 11-27-2012 08:04 PM

Looks great to me! Your son will absolutely love it! It represents all your love, thoughts and worry over him while while he was serving in Afghanistan. It's good to know your Mom "has your back" at all times.

Please thank him for his service for me.

It's just wonderful! And when he is over his Zelda phase, he will still love the quilt for it's dramatic graphic design!

Please add my thanks to your son for his service. I am so very grateful for what these young men and women do to protect our freedom. (Love the quilt, too.)

tracibug 11-27-2012 09:08 PM

It is a beautiful quilt and tastefully incorporates Zelda in to it... don't be surprised if gamers share your pictures and come asking you to make them one as well!!

kat13 11-27-2012 09:17 PM

I did a panel backing for my daughters, she is in the navy..it was awesome...they have all branches at joanns...
Use a thin batting because for some reason the colors red and yellow came thru to the top because I didn't use
batting...lesson learned. Good luck, I know he will love this!

logcabinfran 11-27-2012 09:35 PM

I love it, I am 66 years old, a quilter & and a ZELDA freak. Got hooked on Zelda about 20 years ago & am still playing it. You did a really nice job on the shield. Your son has a great momma.

LoisM 11-28-2012 12:05 AM

I think it's wonderful (love the colors) and I'm sure he'll be very touched when you give it to him.

quilts4charity 11-28-2012 03:31 AM

Looks wonderful to me!!!!

sew_Tracy 11-28-2012 03:54 AM

How cool! How about Donkey Kong on the back for some real nostalgia! The colors are great and the applique turned out nice. What a luck son and lucky all of us for his service. Thanks for sharing him and his quilt.

QuiltnNan 11-28-2012 04:14 AM

turned out great!

Jennalyn 11-28-2012 04:46 AM

Fantastic! I remember reading your initial thread and hoping I'd get a chance to see the top. Between the shield and the triforce corners, I think it screams "Zelda" while maintaining a healthy dose of "guy quilt". Great job! Your applique is beautiful.

GeePatti 11-28-2012 05:57 AM

You did a fantastic job! Good thing you didn't listen to the 'lady' in the store. This is a great guy quilt, and it will be significant to him for the rest of his life.

Maybe you could repeat the shield and sword on the back?

Great job! You are an inspiration!

feline fanatic 11-28-2012 06:21 AM

I too followed your original threads. I remember how much you stressed over it being perfect. I think it looks great. You should take to the person who shot down your idea at the fabric store just to show her it could be done, and not only could be done, but done WELL! Your son will love it.

As far as backing, if you are taking it to a LAQ most prefer the wide backs so it is all one piece. Make sure you thoroughly check out your LAQ (see samples of their work etc) so you know you will be happy with her (or his) work.

DebraK 11-28-2012 08:04 AM

You did it! came out great!

sandybeach 11-28-2012 08:08 AM

Love your quilt. And am very happy your son is home safe and sound. I think the back should be a black flannel. Will add comfort and softness, probably something he could use right now.

LLWinston44 11-28-2012 03:52 PM

Thanks all. I appreciate the appreciation for my son.... it was a long rough deployment. Its always nice to know others appreciate it.
I'm glad you guys like the quilt, especially the Zelda-aholics. lol. He'll NEVER grow out of Zelda. He's loved it since he was 8 years old. lol. Before he deployed, he went out and bought the Nintendo 3ds JUST so he could take the Zelda Ocarina (his favorite version) with him. lol. Funny thing is, a couple of his buddies there were like minded so once he beat the game, it started making the rounds. lol
I did end up writing an e-mail to the store (after I'd gone in a second time looking for thread to applique and had the same woman shoot down my ideas again) and explained how much her comments hurt my feelings and that I no longer looked forward to going into the store for fear of running into her, and that I now avoid it. They replied with an apology and a work schedule so I'd know which days she'd be there. I have another LQS that's just a tad bit farther and they are ALWAYS so helpful. I'll stick to that one, and go to the old one when I 'have' to.
I did so want it to be perfect, and I think for what I did I'm happy with it. I thought about doing the sword and shield on the back but I am just plumb out of time. So I'll have to love it the way it is.

Still torn on what to do with the back.... Would rather it be darker... he would most likely stain anything light. I might go ahead and get a flannel since I'll having it quilted.

Thanks all!!!! <3

rj.neihart 11-29-2012 06:24 AM

It's wonderful! I think this looks absolutely wonderful!

hudgoddess 11-29-2012 06:31 AM

I made a quilt for my deployed soldier. The first thing he did was throw it in the hot wash with Tide with Bleach. What a mess! So I made ANOTHER quilt and gave it to him with a box of color catchers and washing instructions!
Your is beautiful, I advise color catchers!

Normabeth 11-29-2012 06:46 AM

The quilt came out very nice. The black really makes the colors pop.

mjhaess 11-29-2012 08:22 AM

Great man quilt....He will cherish it....

Carol34446 11-29-2012 08:41 AM

A lot of times they use hot water because that is all they have or to get rid of "stuff" they have overseas. But a reminder to NOT wash in hot and some soap would be good too. Some places just getting to wash clothes is a chore. Thank your son for his service. As a vet and ex-wife of career military I know how rough it can be on whole family.

Ditto on thanking him and his brothers and sisters in the miltary for their service to our country. This quilt is super. You should be so proud to have stuck to your guns and finished what you wanted. Many times someone else doesn't have the vision that we do. I am another who doesn't have an acquaintance with Zelda, so I am not sure what it should look like. All I know is that I like the quilt and I am sure that your son will also. Again please give him our thanks and thanks to you and yours for sharing him. BrendaK

This turned out great! I think your colors are perfect.

Rumbols 11-29-2012 09:45 AM

Very nice and you did a great job. Just my opinion, I would get some of the gold fabric for the back and binding to set it off. Thanks for posting.

KellyPA 11-29-2012 10:12 AM

Very nice. I made my hubby a Zelda quilt, but I made it of the Link character. I do have a small tri-force that I made for him, but haven't done anything with... I like how you used them on the 4 corners!

I'm sure he is going to be thrilled! And please thank your son for me, for serving!

wordpaintervs 11-29-2012 11:34 AM

I think it is awesome with or without the sword

Your quilt is great; don't know who Zelda is, but you did a great job. So glad your son came back safely; thank him for his service. My 19 yr. old grandson just finished basic training & I'm sure it is only a matter of time til he is deployed. Prayers for all our service men & women.

Lovely, graphic design for a brave young man.

Thanks everyone! KellyPA I'd love to see your quilt!!!! The Legend of Zelda is a Nintendo game that goes back to the very first Nintendo. When the N64 came out, the Zelda Ocarina of Time came out and was the biggest hit ever. It was the first "3d" game, and Michael LOVED it. The call I got from Michael was that he wanted the "Hylian Shield" So, the Hylian Shield is what he got. I'll include a picture of the shield in this post. The Tri Force (the yellow triangles) represents Power, Wisdom and Courage. I sound like I know a lot, but I don't. It's what I learned in making this. lol.

Maralyn 11-30-2012 07:06 PM

You did a great job - I agree with others - please thank your son for serving.
