I think the price is set too high. Sometimes ebay sellers aren't very knowledgeable.
But I like it. She must have been a really good piecer. Can you imagine cutting out all those little pieces with scissors and even getting close to making the seams match and it not getting all puffy in the middle? I don't think I would have been so adventurous--I started one but didn't get it finished--just strip piecing.
I wonder if it really IS a Swiss quilt, or possibly it came from the U.S. somehow. The reason I wonder is I'm not sure the Swiss were into quilting back then. Part of my family is Swiss, and I think that accounts for the fact that even though they married into a family from West Virginia that I don't know of anyone in the family that has quilted in the past. (The Swiss girl would have been the one that married my g-g-grandfather and passed on her domestic skills to the next generation.)

Absolutely stunning...and to think this quilt had to be hand stitched... I agree with grammiepamie. I also see a great depth to the star. I love working with the different star patterns but this one is well beyond my abilities! Whoever this lady may have been, my hat is off to her. She was a first class stitcher /quilter...

Well, it certainly is beautiful! I am wondering exactly what kind of verification there is that it is from 1840? I guess I just think the fabric colors would not still be quite so vibrant. I have a quilt (family heirloom) that does date back to 1876....ugliest quilt I have ever seen...but it is MINE!!! The fabrics in it are just not as vibrant as these. I think (as with lots of things on ebay) it is 'buyer beware'.

It's a gorgeous quilt and I love the pattern. What surprises me is that the colors are still so vibrant and there's no sign of ware. Amazing! Have they offered any certificate of prove it's that old???
