Default A quilt for a friend .... just because

A dear neighbor and friend was down sizing her stash a couple of years ago. There was the gorgeous fabric from Hoffman - the fabric line was called Valley of the Kings of which she had several 1 yd cuts. It was heavily gilded and just gorgeous. I talked her into keeping it (the rest she sent to Good Will)..Well ,a few months after that she showed up at my door with the fabric in tow saying she knew that I would do something great with it. I have looked and looked at it trying to decide what to do with it. While it is truly gorgeous fabric - it was not something I would make for myself. Recently here on the QB, someone posted a purple and gray quilt they had made for a baby .... TaDa! I decided that would be perfect to highlight the fabric.s.

She had the pale blue as well as the 1 yd cuts, but I added pure black to the mix. I used two of the gilded fabrics for the squares, a third for the fillers on the sides and the last (which was striped) for a large 1" binding. I chose 1" because anything smaller and you would loose the look of the actual design in the fabric. I quilted it with a large fan design in pale blue (in retrospect I should have used a gold thread) and put a pale blue as the backing. Delivered it yesterday - it was a surprise and she was over the moon with her new quilt!!

So whoever had that great purple and gray baby quilt - Thank you thank you thank you!!

You certainly did a fabulous job showing off her gorgeous fabric. No wonder she was thrilled.

Thanks for sharing the closeup photo, too. Although this is lovely in photos, it must be spectacular in real life!

Wow! Great way to showcase those fabrics and the quilting provides a nice contrast to the square blocks, while at the same time looking like it fits right in with the motifs in the printed fabric. Well done!
