Do you use patterns or just "wing it"?

Good job! Have you ever heard of "Stash Therapy"? I took the class last Spring. It is a method for organizing your stash, wherein you cut your fabric remnants into squares sized 2", 3 1/2" and 5" (depending on the size of the remnant). You store the squares in plastic shoebox bins, separating them according to light, dark or medium tone color. Then whenever you want to make a scrappy quilt, you have everything ready to get started. There are several "Stash Therapy" patterns and also the 5" squares can be used for any pattern that calls for charm packs. If I EVER finish cutting and organizing my stash (I have a HUGE stash), I plan to whip up a bunch of scrappy quilts. I promise to post my stuff when the time comes.

No, haven't heard of "stash therapy" but my scraps are organized by color specifically for scrap quilts. My fat qtrs and less are set up on their sides so all I have to do is finger file for the right color in ea color box like you would for papers in a file folder; all are portable so I don't disturb anything else but the color I'm searching for. Scrap bags are already organized by size, multicolor, for 2" projects and smaller, etc. etc. When I make big quilts, all leftovers are dealt with then to go in appr. bins, cut down to strips, 2" sq., 2-1/2 in. sq., etc. This way you don't have a mess to sort out later. For example, all strings are org.'d by size, (sm, med, lg) and making string quilts is a piece of cake because they are ready to go. Just sit down and do it. Organization is the key. Just keep making quilts and you'll never have to do what you just said about cutting them out to do your project; they will have already been done by organizing your leftovers from bigger projects. Hope this makes sense. I hardly ever cut for a project; it's already. I keep tons of 2-patches, 4-patches, 3-patches, 6- patches sewn together - just for the 9-patches I asssemble or whatever I need them for. Way cool, huh?
